Navy: travels A LOT! Not very family friendly.
Air Force: Great way to stay in one place and be supportive of a family.
Marines: Good for a challenge and very dangerous. Front lines
Army: Travel for long time periods but home for long time periods as well. Better options for where to be stationed.
Then there is coast guards and such that are just other choices
ALL BRANCHES PAY THE SAME!!! Depending on the job you get and the need... there may be sign on bonuses. Also some rates (jobs) advance quicker then others which in the long run equal more pay but that is dependent on YOU! Do good on the ASVAB and PICK YOUR JOB! DO NOT let them pick your job!!!! They will give you the jobs that others that know better, don't want!
Iamkim's answer is excellent. Generally the army has the best post enlistment benefits, GI bill etc, because it's less glamorous and provides fewer civilian job skills, but this changes often. Figure out what it is you want from a military career and go for that.

Best kept secret: the National Guard. There is Air (USAF) & Army. Why? You get the best of both worlds, and if you decide you really like it, they have full time opportunities. The Guard has a dual mission: we can be activated by our Governor and respond to emergencies here at home (Hurricanes, floods, fires, etc) or we can answer our nation's call and take part in missions worldwide. It is stable, you join where you choose and stay there as long as you want until you pursue opportunities elsewhere/at other units. There are college funds available, bonuses for certain high demand careers and other military benefits. it is family friendly. We also have a saying: TGIF: the guard is family...true. I have been in the Air National guard 18 years...best decision ever made!!
the united states marine corps is the best branch because unlike the other branches, it is a challenge and it is the most important. The corps is also a giant family and once you earn the title of Marine, it is yours till the day you die. Semper Fi brother.
