Much like all cases with all religions, the extremists backed him in that he was taking aim at their opponents. The moderates mostly kept quiet and did nothing. Hitler claimed in his writings that he felt he was doing the work of the church and the will of God by exterminating the Jews. I wonder how many genocidal lunatics throughout history have claimed their terrible deeds and sick ideas were "the will of God"?

The Vatican never endorsed the Nazis. The pope had to be discrete due to Italy being allied with the Germans and the Germans were in Italy in force. Hitler would have thought nothing of invading the Vatican and getting his grubby hands on their artwork. Pope John-Paul II was a German priest during the Nazi years and worked against the Nazis when he could. The only reason the Germans did not invade the Vatican is that the Germans knew they would have the entire Italian army and every Italian citizen to contend with and the Vatican did not provoke Hitler into doing something stupid. But there are documents that hint that the Vatican and the pope secretly informed the priesthood to work against the Nazis any way they could.
1. Pope Pius XII was the pope during World War II. He was pope from 1939 till his death in 1958. An excellent source of information on his involvement with Hitler and the Jews is at: http://popepiusxiiandthejews.blogspot.com/?m=1 2. Pope John Paul II lived through the Soviet occupation of Poland, during World War II; and was pope from 1978 till his death in 2005. An excellent article on his involvement with communism and the Soviet Union is at: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2656741/posts I hope this fully answers your question; and helps some.
