It's great that you are asking instead of not knowing what you are getting. Dogs were bred for specific purposes so their nature goes along with that breeding. So, it depends on what you want the dog for. Everyone will have his/her opinion of course, but some breeds are better for family fun and some protection like a boxer or lab; very active breeds will be difficult inside if they don't get a chance to work off energy like Australian Shepherds; if you want a dog that is easy going then look at adopting a greyhound; best of all, get a dog from the local shelter, go there and be around the dog a bit and see how you and it get along.
Depends on you and your lifestyle. Personally I would recommend getting a golden retriever. I have a golden retriever and they make the perfect pet. They are loving(get so excited when you come home from school/work), aren't yippy at all, smart(average goldens know 100 words), love attention and love to play with you. One thing you need to know about golden retrievers....they shed, and they are big dogs(not recamended if you own a small apartment).
