I took in a stray kitten. How can I socialize her and get her used to people?

I took in a cat (Mama) and her kitten (Kitch). They are both female. Mama is friendly and is used to living in a house, but Kitch is shy and hides. Is there a way to get her comfortable with people?

Make sure she gets lots of attention

Just read something about this. It depends on how old the kitten is; if it was too old before being socialized to humans, you're probably out of luck. One of my 3 cats wasn't socialized to humans and I pretty much never see her. But she still has a better home than under my neighbor's garage, which is where she was living. Check the ASPCA's web site for some good information.

I was told by my vet that (once she gets comfortable with you) holding the kitten close to your chest/heart while others softly speak and slowly approach is a good way to introduce them and get them to socialize. Remember that cats don't like a lot of eye contact (it's an aggressive act to them). Also, you may want to keep the introductions down to one or two people at a time so that your kitty doesn't get overwhelmed. Good Luck and give her a little kiss on the head from me!

nerdboy has best answer. It always worked with my kitties--and I had some shy calicos! I held them on my lap and they eventually became real "lovies."

Well, I would keep her away from little kids. Little kids can often mistreat small animals without meaning to, so it makes the animals shy. Also, try and invite mature people over and, in the most subtle of ways, introduce the kitten to them.

Why didn't u keep the mother and where did she go?
Report as
I adopted her out

it's not true that you can't keep both mother and kitten. kittens learn from their mommas, how to behave, use a cat box and other stuff. but now she's gone have your kitty spayed so she stays healthy and happy.

No it is true the mother gets depressed and stress and can become very sick trust me in training to become a vet

And you should have adopte the kitten out because she has a better chance of being adopted then a cat because it seems every one wants a tiny kitten but it seems no one wants a beautiful cat it's horrible I know but it's true

my cousin took the mom cat. is it alright if the mom and kitten visit?
Report as
No you can't have them together any cats shouldn't visit each other anyway because cats are very territorial so they become aggressive

All you have to do is try to be gentle, but if that doesn't work, try giving the kitten some space. The kitten will go to you and others when it is ready. If that doesn't work, try avoiding the kitten. The kitten will feel lonely, and it will be more social, and a wonderful companion.

Pay a lot of attention to her mother and treat her very nicely. Try not to be very loud and distruptive and if you have time try to sit down and just read a book, keep your posture open adn welcomeing and maybe the kitten will climb on.

You have to spend a lot of time playing with the kitty, holding her, petting and brushing her, and when she's comfortable with you, introduce her to new people. You may want to try and get her to sleep with you too.

make sure there arnt any loud noises while your trying to socialize with her. the best idea is to try to get the mother to hang around u visible to the kitten so she knows that its safe .. when u try to pet her or hold her make the mom stick around with u and the kitten
