What causes an annoying itch?

How does an itch on the body happen in random spots at random places at random times?

I know of two causes for itching - allergic responses and simple desquamation of skin cells. Both cause a tiny zone of inflammatory responses that we feel as an itch. It's called Pruritus and it responds to several simple treatments. My favorite is to use "Zostrix" - a cream you get at the Pharmacy that contains a STRONG dose of the hot ingredient in chillies (capsaicin). Rub this sparingly over an itch and the cream will sting briefly and then destroy the itch response. BRILLIANT!!!! Just keep it away from your eyes and genitals, otherwise have fun and be itch-free immediately....

For me, it always happens when I can't itch. Like if I just painted my nails, my body automatically has to itch everywhere

I was on a pretty strong pain killer once for post surgery and it had a side effect of making you itch, and it did, made me itch everywhere! Not sure why, but I've heard it has something to do with your nerves.

It could be caused by a reaction to something you ate or a new medication (I have this reaction if I take Tylenol). Are you using anything different that touches your body? or a new detergent? I have read that some people itch when they are nervous. Other than that idk.
