Can you become a good artist if your are not naturally inclined to be so?

I'm a naturally-born visual artist and writer, however, I can't draw from directly on top of my head, and there are some things that I can't draw. I have to learn and practice to draw the things that I am unable to draw. Example: People

I believe you can with determination practice and patience. If you want to be so good the whole world kisses your rear end in admiration that is another matter though. You could also crank out a good piece of art that is not recognized right away.

You can become a good 'technical' artist. Just like with singing, with a lot of training a person can sound 'technically' good but they don't have the natural ability to sing well.

By all means, you can become a good artist without having a natural inclination towards a specific art. None of us, even the greatest artists, are born with our skills. We learn them. Some of us learn them more quickly than others. Those fast learners are the ones we say have a natural talent.

Of course, it is one thing to have learned a skill. It is another to have the perception of how to best apply that skill. This is called "taste" and tastes change in society. A good artist will be able to explore different styles reflecting different tastes and find one that speaks to both oneself and others.

Finally, you can have good taste and good skills, but not anything burning inside you that must be expressed, that must be captured in paint, something that is intriguing and expresses how you feel about the subject, the colors, the movement of the eye as it sees the piece, the emotional response. If one cannot develop this, then one can still have a career as an artist - perhaps creating graphics, perhaps being an illustrator for textbooks or ads. Those types of art can even become cherished as works of art, even though they are not initially hung in galleries.

Excellent answer James! I believe you are an artist because you wrote from
the heart as well as the brain. Very encouraging; I think I will try painting!

Wow that's a good answer<3

Very good answer. I like that you mention the word "expression". I think that is a major element of art.

The question is not "can you"
The question is "why bother" .

Successful artist is a combination of nature and nurture work. If any of that failed, he wouldn't be successful.

Everyone is talented for something. If you are not talented for art and not naturally inclined to that, why lose time pursuing it? You'll have a tough competition of naturally talented people who work hard and you wouldn't be able to beat that because the advantage they have is too great.

Focus on what you are inclined instead.

i want to make art for me not to compete. ...not everything is made for that purpose
Report as
I think you can succeed because you want to make art for the right reasons.

well, you can always try if you find that experience fulfilling... and who knows, maybe your own thinking that you are not talented is wrong... or maybe someone who told you that is wrong. We can't know that for certain.
However what I said is true in general - if one is serious about something he is not talented for, he better directs his energy into what he is talented for. Talent+energy= double success. Nothing beats that!
Anyway, best wishes in your endeavours, whatever they might be!

Does anybody really think that they didn't get what they had because they didn't have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment?.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

While there is a speck of truth in what you say, I must disagree. Just as there are many talented, genius, educated people who still failed, so are there many determined people who persisted their entire lives and still failed. Sometimes it just comes down to chance, plain and simple.

I think so, maybe it depends on what you are an artist at? I like to draw, and been told I am very good but I can only draw black and white and things I look at, I can't draw from my head, which really aggravates me! I'd like to be better, so I might go to classes or just keep practicing.

Yes, absolutely. The basics are learned and if you are willing to work at your craft, you will develop the passion and "eye". Most of all enjoy....and be prepared for criticism, it's part of putting yourself out there. If you can't deal with negativity, art may not be your cup of tea. Also realize successful means many things to many people. If your idea of success is money, by all means get into design and graphic art. If you want to be happy, do whatever pleases you.....the money will follow....or not. Buy a book named "the Artists Way', Julia Cameron. It works!

Love this question. It is one I have pondered my entire life...First, you have to define "naturally inclined." To me, this means you have a penchant for, you are interested in, you feel a "pull" toward doing it. When that happens, you WANT or even NEED to spend your TIME doing it. When you spend TIME doing it, you "naturally" get better at it, because you've put the time in! In music, I have found that there are people who want to be able to sing, and have asked me if they can "learn." What I find, when people are not naturally inclined to it, it becomes more of need to satisfy their ego. Their friend can do it, or they love Madonna, and want to sing "just like her." When that is the case, you will never be good at it, because you are not honoring yourself. You are trying to be something you are not...SO, why waste your time, trying to be somebody else? Be who you are. Figure out what your own penchant is...your love, and do that. You may not make a lot of MONEY at it, but you will do it to feed your soul...that's what I do, at the moment...and am getting recognition for it, and it feels good... for the soul.

'good is so subjective. what is good to one person may be bad to another.
when i sell my art work...i am always amazed and honored that someone has paid their hard earned cash and made a place for it to be showcased in their home.
if you still feel you need to improve your skills i can recommend a very good book to read. it will help you develope your skills at realistic type drawing...if that's the style that you want to improve upon
[] Drawing from the right side of the brain by Betty Edwards <----- it will teach you a lot.

Yes, you can. The fact that you ask means you are interested in it, which is an indicator that you may already have some natural ability. I don't think people are born with "artistic talent". I think people are born with strengths, weaknesses, and genetic tendencies that influence their future interests. But then, throughout your life, nurture mixes with nature to make you who you are with the interests you have. Art is also a mix of artistic ideas and craftsmanship. You can be inspired to make art, but you have to learn the discipline of, say, drawing in perspective, applying paint, or doing a tattoo...As I'm sure you can see by the responses, you have asked an excellent question.

It does not matter whether you are good or not,you will make it in the "music market".It is not about how skilful you are,it is about how you bring out yourself to your intended fans.No wonder Lady Gaga is so"...."yet she is making it...

OF corse you can no matter what your skills are you don't always have to have a natural talent to be good at something if you work towards it and thats relly what you want then you could be anything you wanted.

Some people are born with natural talent, but some just work harder. You can see that, even in Sports, how guys like Michael Jordan just worked harder.

It might be more difficult if you're not born with natural instincts, but if you really want it you can accomplish anything. Just work on your strengths.

Yes! I used to suck but then i bought an anime artist book with step by step instructions. Before you start following the directions though, trace the picture. After you get used to that you will do better when you are actually drawing it. :)
