My mom is an obsessive hoarder, its ruining my life, what should I do?

I tried cleaning out the fridge and pantry today and found old canned goods passed expiration date, I tried throwing them away but all she did is scream at me and wants me out of the house now, I want her to get help because it ruins my life and hers,

Try throwing stuff away when she is gone that you'll know she won't ever miss.

Throw away the stuff while she's sleeping? Maybe if you keep doing that and the house gets cleaner she'll realize how much better it is to live in a clean house that doesn't have extra garbage laying around. :)

I agree with SS. It's a disease so it'll be hard for her to just "throw" things away. They are all precious to HER, even though it's all garbage to people like us who don't have the disease.

i feel at times i have it i dont want to have it but its hard for me to throw away some stuff i dont want to do this to my future children or be like this its stressful and emotionally sickning

You may or may not have it, but only time will tell for now. It's an obsessive compulsive disease. Try to check your behavior now, so you can stay aware of it later. Be proud of yourself because you've recognized it early. Sorry you have to live that way. It must be hard.

Maybe an Uncle or Aunt could try talking to her. She does need help. If she is especially afraid of bugs or vermin you might mention that all that clutter gives them a great place to hide.

She, like most hoarders needs psychiatric care. She has to be willing to help herself first. A lot of hoarders have alienated themselves from their families because of this. If it were my mother I would have cleaned out her food also, because of of chance she may get sick. I would try my hardest to convince her to seek out professional help. Tell her you want her to get help because you love her very much, and want her to be healthy and happy. I'm not an expert, but I have watched Hoarders on TV, and it would be very frustrating to deal with a loved on with this sickness.

Hoarding is a psychological disorder. Some people just can't let go.

As Jedi said. It has nothing to do with being "messy and filthy". She needs long term therapy and slow treatment to see the long term problems it causes on her, as well as the health of her child.
