I certainly share this problem (but then, I am older than dirt)
As near as I can tell, memories seem to get "fixed" based on two things:
1) How important they seem to us at the time, and
2) How many linking 'cues' get assigned to them.
It is not abnormal Humans encounter a Lot of information at any given tie, and we are wired to only remember the important stuff. Unfortunately, the wiring in question may have an inconveniently different definition of "important" than its owner.

Forgetting things is not an abnormality, but a state of mind. We tend to forget or remember things based on their importance. If something is not important, then there are high chances that you will remember less or nothing at all.
