No, it was invented by the Indian priesthood to have authority over the ruling class and exploit the lower classes. It is still the excuse for the caste system in India where you can never leave your caste except through fully accepting it and building karma through subservience so that you can reincarnate into a higher caste after death. The lowest class are called the "untouchables" because you can't touch them without being tainted and they are only allowed to clean toilets and live in the mud. Anybody who wants can beat them.

You can argue that the papacy was created to keep control (both religiously and monetarily) of Christianity. Anyway, that is only vaguely related.
The caste system is regulated by culture and religious beliefs in said system, not by karma. Karma contributes to the belief in that it controls later changes to caste position, but it is not the rhyme and reason for the caste system. If it were, the society would be a pure meritocracy, as opposed to a caste-hierarchy.

What keeps it from being a meritocracy is that you don't reap the benefits until after you're dead. Karma is a basic part of the religious beliefs. The entire political system was based in Hinduism and lineages from mythical kings and the only thing that interfered with that was colonial rule.

Also, the papacy was not formed on any principles of political power, it was simply a guardianship of church doctrine for a persecuted minority religion within Rome who's religion was a lot more akin, as a state religion with royal lineages extending to gods, to Hinduism. What changes this was the adoption of Christianity by Emperor Constantine and the ensuing rush to convert by all other European rulers based on the desire for the prestige that could be gained by mirroring him.

Of course, karma is a founding principle, but it is not the be-all and end-all of the system. The caste system itself is designed for the priesthood to control the population, but the lifetime-shackle nature of the system is a result of that control, not karma itself. It's the old saying, 'A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square.' Karma is part of the caste system, but the caste system is not part of karma.

Oh, I don't think we went overboard, Saxy, except for that part about the papacy. That was just another little mental treat. I guess I agree with you in that the way you've laid it out on paper looks perfect, but I think the reality of it is that we are talking about living feeling people who aren't just going to accept a caste without some sort of reward that keeps them from revolting and overthrowing the system. Reincarnation means that you can break free, but karma is the vehicle for getting there. When your caste is a farmer or untouchable who are the two largest classes and the vast majority of the population, that's a pretty difficult life to accept. If you could just reincarnate I'm sure they'd just commit suicide. Karma ensures that rather than just laying down and waiting for death they lead productive lives that ensure the wealth of the rulers and therefore the wealth and power of the priests. I understand that you were a little more meticulous in your care of the subject while I was simply making a sweeping statement which is why it seemed that I put the cart in front of the horse with karma and castes as you say. Also, thanks Cloud, I'm glad this website has so many thoughtful opinionated people to share some mental push-ups with. This one is totally keeping me on my toes!

Indeed, I do. Energy never dies, it has been proven scientifically. The universe recycles energy. The energy that we give and put out into the universe will either be negative or positive. In my opinion it only makes sense that you recieve back the type of energy you put out. Positive out, positive in.
