If I told you there was a giant flying magic spaghetti monster in the sky, would you believe me? Then why do you believe in god?

Don't say because the bible says so, and that it was written by god. "If god isn't real, then how did he write this book?" Well, Just because Harry Potter is a book doesn't mean he wrote it.

Report as

I'm an atheist myself, but it is your choice what you want to believe in. You cannot force atheism on others.

I don't believe, but I guess it's because some people are raised that way. It's called brainwashing. I mean, I can make a child believe anything if I teach them about it at the right age. Unfortunately, this research can't be done because this would be considered lack of free choice and also considered brainwashing, which is unconstitutional. Although how in the world do Christians still get away with it, is the biggest question so far.

You are coming from the presupposition that God is not real. So you discredit the Bible already. Harry Potter is a book and the author is revealed, as Rowling. The Bible also has a revealed author and that is God.

Report as
JustWanderin
The philosophic burden of proof lies upon a person making scientifically unfalsifiable claims rather than shifting the burden of proof to others, specifically in the case of religion. It is not our burden to prove God does not exist. It is yours to prove it does.
Report as
And besides that, we have proof it doesn't. Natural selection, Theory of Evolution, Big Bang Theory, science proved all of those real.
Report as
big bang theory, impossible based on the fact that nothing can combust without an ignition source and the particles to combust, the big bang theory has the idea of creating something out of nothing, God would be required for this to work, theory of evolution and natural selection are false according to the scientific method since Chalres Darwin only studied one species of bird in one place. also, notice that what you referenced are theories whereas God is a fact of reality
Report as
Your ignorance amuses me.
Natural selection was actually tested on guppies and turtles in the Galapagos, and well as about every other animal there. Darwin found the same species of animals to be altered on different planets.

Big Bang was consisted of too much, and it is the birth of a star. The is an explosion.

Report as
It's like when you have concentrated dump, and after a while you just can't hold it in and it explodes in your pants, to spread and make a shit-universe.
Report as
but according to the theory, the explosion happened from nothing, that is impossible according to your science
Report as
The complexity caused the explosion. Like I said, a star exploding is like how it happened.

God exists, and there are multiple counts of evidence for him existing, eucharistic miracles all over the world, stigmatics, appearances by the virgin mary to public places such as Fatima where hundreds saw her all at the same time and described exactly the same situation. and many more things, the flying sphagetti monster or whatever has no historical or physical evidence whatsoever

So, by miracles you mean just generic good things that happened? And maybe you don't think some smart person was bullshitting everyone? I mean, Jesus could have easily turned around, but a dark fruit juice in some water and pass it off as wine.

yes there is, since we have dried samples of the types of wine used in that time in science labs, the wine was about twice as strong as anything we make because distilling methods were much cruder, people would have been able to tell, just because oyu choose to ignore evidence doesnt mean it isnt there

Prove Jesus existed first then tell me how he made water into wine and prove that the wedding story even happened.
Report as
the Annalls of Tacitus and the writings of Flavius Josephus, both roman historians who believed in the pagan Gods, they both have accounts of the wedding, and they both have copies of the roman census which counted Jesus, Mary and Joseph in them. and he made water into wine through the power of God, its called a miracle.
Report as
Regardless of whether or not the turning of water into wine was a trick or not, is there proof that the water-to-wine story is even true, or is it a myth based on some less dramatic event that ardent followers would have put forward to bolster their claim of Jesus' divinity?
Report as
Sorry, Sharkdart. Don't know why I didn't see your comment before I posted basically the same thing.
Report as
no, as i said, the account is in both the annalls of Tacitus, and the writings of Flavius Josephus, neither of which were followers of Christ, and neither of which even asscociated with followers of Christ, for fear of execution by the roman government
Report as
The Annalls of Tacitus was written more than 115 years after the death of Jesus, so the Wedding story would have been a third hand account if it happened at all. And it must be remembered that Tacitus was also a pagan theist who would have readily accepted the possibility of supernatural events without ascribing divinity to Jesus.

As to Josephus, I would need to do more research, but it would also be a third hand account, and Josephus would most likely have not been skeptical of purported supernatural events.
Report as
I should add that biblical times are often referred to as "a time of miracles". It is my view that there were no more miraculous events then than there are now. It is just that now we have a greater understanding of those events in the context of our progressive knowledge of the natural world. It would not be surprising that people living in the ignorance of those times would embellish their stories by reflecting on what they imagined had caused those events.

None of what you provided is even proof. Just statements.

Oh ye of little faith, take all of that negative energy of yours, and do something positive with it. Instead of living a drab, unfulfilled life by dragging others to your sad level, rise up, and feel the peace, calm, and satisfaction of living a truly full life! Belief, is just that, we all could do better with our lives, if only we put forth more effort. Sadly, in my opinion, your cup is way past 1/2 empty! And yes, that's a judgement, something good people shouldn't do. But there are times such as this, when you have to push back against such obvious attacks of ones beliefs! :(

If God said there was a giant flying magic spaghetti monster in the sky, I would believe Him. You're not God.
There is proof that God exists. You just don't see it. The whole world is proof, actually.

God made science.
Report as
No, the Flying Spaghetti Monster made the world and science, and you can't prove me wrong.
Report as
I believe in God and you can't prove me wrong. So now shut it.
Report as
Actually, we can prove you wrong. Can you prove yourself right?
Here's 3 reasons why you are wrong:
- The world was created by particles of dust forming around a central gravity point to create the planet that we know live on and see.
- The Universe was created by the Big Bang.
- Life and animals are simple mutations in biology. They mutated into what they are. Monkeys mutated into Humans.
Report as
But you also can't be proved right.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster made your god. Then your god made the universe. Ergo- the Flying Spaghetti monster made the universe.
Report as

Report as
wickedpissah
Yes.
Report as
Actually, that's where you're wrong again.
Horses are physical multicellular organisms that we can see and communicate with.
God is not a physical multicellular organism that we can physically see or cumminicate with. You think you can, and convinced yourself you can, but in reality, it's all a mere lie.
Report as
I gave that example because I was trying to explain that I believe God exists as strongly as I believe horses exist. Maybe you don't see the proof, but I do.
Report as
wickedpissah
Horselover- I've seen a horse. I've ridden a horse. Horses are real.
Show me your "god." Let me ride your "god". Then I'll concede.
Report as
You can't believe horses exist. They are walking and physical proof. That's like believing that breathing exists. You can only believe what is not proven to be existent. God can't be proven to be real, and he can be proven not real.
Report as
Well, like I said, I believe in God. We can't SEE Him, but He gave us more than enough proof that he exists. (If He revealed Himself to us, our eyes aren't powerful enough to see Him. We would turn into powder because of His greatness. On the day of judgement though, He'll give our eyes the power to see Him.)
Report as
What is this proof then?
Report as
The Holy books. Not to mention the world itself is proof and everything in it.
Report as
The "Holy Books" could have been written by anyone claiming to be a God.
The world was created from dust particles being attracted to a central gravitational point. Life was created by the Theory of Evolution (which is proven) and biology.
There is a scientific and logical explanation for everything, but people still have faith in an unproven God.
Report as
Even IF the big bang theory and all were true (they aren't), I would still say that it all happened from God's commandment. And if the big bang were true, where do you think the dust particles came from, anyway?
And there is enough proof in the Holy books that show that a human couldn't have written them. I'm a Muslim and I believe in all the Holy books, but because I'm a Muslim, I follow the Qur'an. But all the Holy books have been changed, except the Qur'an. So now, you may not find proof like that in the other Holy books that show you how this could not have been written by humans, but Qur'an is accurate and still has proof like that.
Not to mention that I experienced more than enough proof in life that just made my belief in God stronger.
Report as
wickedpissah
The existence of the world is not proof that your god exists. It's proof that the Flying Spaghetti Monster exists, for it was His Noodly Goodness that created the world, and midgets, and beer, and pirates, and meatballs.

Hardly the same thing. The spaghetti monster doesn't have 2000 years of followers (yet). But don't worry. Someone will make up something similar, a new religion, based on ridiculous stories and far-fetched hypotheses. Ya know, like Scientology or Mormonism.

@Captain: It is a valid question stated in a somewhat whimsical manner. But atheists are asked to believe in God all the time (a concept many of us find to be somewhat whimsical by definition). But when asked why we don't believe in God, we are not insulted. We state our case for why we do not believe in God. Therefore, it is a valid question to ask in turn why others DO believe in God.

I disagree that the intent of the questioner is to make believers "feel badly or stupid for believing in God". If they do feel that way, then perhaps they aren't the believer they thought they were, and it is doing them a service by asking the question. Asking any question about opinions and beliefs forces people to evaluate deeply why they have that opinion or belief. Some may change their opinion or belief as a result, but some will find the answers that further support their opinion or strengthens their beliefs. And the latter, you must agree, would be a good thing. To NOT ask the question would be to deny them the opportunity for greater faith.
Report as
In absolutly NO way is this a whimsical question. And I know for a fact that all the real Christians in the world are not going to make fun of someone that doesn't believe in God. It just makes me mad to see people making fun of religion like this. If you are an Atheist, Satanist, or have a different religion, fine by me, but dont you dare make fun of it.
Report as
So let's take Halloween. Should no one where a witch or devil costume because that is making fun of Wiccans and Satanists? We are not allowed to poke fun at the Scientologists for believing our bodies are occupied by extraterrestrial life forms? Should the Birthers be immune from ridicule because they believe our president is a Kenyan communist Muslim out to destroy America? If those who perceive offense don't like it, then they should defend themselves. I know the Wiccans often address the issue of disrespect for their belief system--and rightfully so. But I doubt it will stop the wearing of witch costumes.
Report as
Those have nothing to do with religion kid. I dont know if you are trolling or if you actually think being rude is okay.
Report as
First of all, Captain, I am not a kid. I am 63 years old with a life full of experiences regarding religion, spirituality, and wealth of other knowledge gained by experience (read my profile). So if you can show me where I was disrespectful toward you at any time, let me know and I will apologize. Until then, I suggest you suspend your ACTUAL rude comments, and devote your responses to debating the issue rather than trying to disrespect me by calling me a kid. If you are unable to engage in a civil debate for some reason, then make way for those who are.

Now, are you saying Wicca, Satanism, and Scientology are NOT religions? You may not adhere to those particular belief systems, but that does not mean they are any less faith-based guides to living ones life than is Judaism, Islam, Mormonism, Jainism, Buddhism, or Hindu--just to name a few of the thousands of various faith-based worldviews.
Report as
Sorry. I just hate people disrespecting religion. Meant nothing rude to you.
