Is peppermint oil and peppermint extract the same thing?

The recipe called for peppermint oil. I couldn't find peppermint oil in my local store, but I did find peppermint extract.

They are not the same thing. Oils are usually more higher concentrated than extracts, so you would need to use more extract than oil, if you decide to use it in your recipe.

According to the following site (under the "extracts = flavoring extracts = liquid flavor essences" section)...

"One part flavoring oil is roughly equivalent to four parts extract, but this may vary according to the products used. To be safe, begin by substituting 1/8 teaspoon of oil per teaspoon of extract, then add more drops of oil until you're satisfied with the flavor."

Also if you are making candy, extract will not work, because they are water and alcohol based. You really need the oil, you can find it at Micheals, most craft stores and a lot of cooking stores.
