I love my Ruger, so you've already made the most difficult part of the decision. If you plan on using it a lot, go with whichever ammo is cheaper. (I've not ever priced 9mm ammo, so I have no frame of reference to help you out with that.) I have a .410 that I really love to shoot, but I don't shoot it very often simply because the ammo is so doggone expensive. It's just something to think about.
I've got a 9mm and 45 in close combat the 45 is more powerfull and will blow the attacker back. The 9mm with hollow points will do some bad damage. But a zombie might be able to walk threw the shots before he falls.

Assuming this is 9mm Luger and 45 ACP I'll give you my opinion. Ruger is top of the line in my opinion. 9MM is better for home defense situations. The 45 will puncture clean through a wall and could possibly hurt someone on the other side. The 9mm could still do this but the chances are much lower. The 45 has a slower muzzle velocity but a much higher knock down capacity, but, I have yet to figure out how a person with a bullet hole in them could tell the difference. Outdoors I would go with the 45. Not exactly bear deterrent but a mountain lion wouldn't like it. In the end it all depends on the situation. I don't look at price as a determining factor because no one should complain about having to spend a couple extra bucks to protect themselves.
