Small claims court limits the amount of damages that can be rewarded to the injured party. A ceiling of $1200 is common so anything greater than that for damages will be assigned to a civil court. Criminal charges are not assigned in small claims or civil court. I hoot this has helped you and I now think this is not a homework assignment. If you have questions, usually the first visit to an attorneys office is free. Always seek legal advice and do not assume friends have the answers.
Another role that small claims court plays in the legal system, is it weeds out the smaller stuff and keeps the cost down. If we had to run everything through the larger courts, it would take a lot of time to get through the cases and would cost us more money in the long run. Not just those that are filing claims, but all of us that pay taxes on a county, state and even federal level.
