What... But if you were to keep going, Alaska wouldn't be the eastern-most! Because there is still land east of Alaska, Alaska is not the eastern-most state. How the heck do I answer this.

I know, r?
It all hangs in how the question is phrased. In this case, it says "which state -includes- the easternmost land in the US" and Alaska includes a few islands in the Aleutians that are at longitude 178 or 179 E while the rest of Alaska is in W longitudes (180 is the demarcation of east and west.
It's silly, isn't it? I got caught and confused by it like you, too so I had to warn it was a trick question.

Think of the Aleutian Islands as remnants of the ancient land bridge that once connected Asia to North America. The westernmost island that is still in Alaska is actually considered to be part of the Eastern hemisphere, because of its longitudinal location; islands that are just slightly further west are part of Russia. Remember that old joke about Sarah Palin saying she could see Russia from her house? It's kinda like that. If you go far enough west, you end up in the east. Hope this helps.

Maine? No, this is a trick question, and that would be too obvious. Is it somewhere in Alaska, because of some trick of longitude?

Correct!
Because the Aleutians (that string of islands) crosses over 180 degree longitude.

Heh, I meant the fact surprised me when I first heard it -- not that I was surprised you got it right!
Yikes, I always run the risk of accidentally offending people when I try to be less verbose. No wonder I talk/write too much!

Alaska by degrees absolutly correct.
Was going to say: Point Udall, St Croix USVI, turns out it is... But only in "travel time" not by degrees.
