I'm scared of flying. What should I do?

My friend wants me to fly down to her house, but I'm scared of flying. I've been on planes before, and I'd probably be okay with flying if I didn't have to go alone, but I would if I flew down. What should I do?

It is not as simple as "positive thoughts", or "you are scared for nothing." Why? Because though a person is very safe PHYSICALLY when flying, they are not safe EMOTIONALLY when they are not in control and not able to immediately escape.

Though some of our feelings are controlled by what we think, we also have feelings that are controlled outside of consciousness. The unconscious systems are developed early in life, and in some of us, the development does not go well because of various reasons. If the reasons interest you, see the videos and articles at http://developingchild.harvard.edu

If you don't have trouble with panic attacks (on the ground), there is enough free help at http://www.fearofflying.com/free-video/ to get you through the flight. If you do have trouble with panic, you will need to learn how to retrain the unconscious systems that regulate emotion. Forget medication; that only makes things worse in the long run.

Today's planes are soo much more better than the planes before. It is unlikely for It to crash, very unlikely. Don't worry, just think about the positive thought of flying because you know you're gonna get there safely (:

If you've never been on a plane before, you are scared for nothing. If you have and for some reason are scared of nothing, ask your Dr. for some anti-anxiety medication for the flight.

There's nothing to be afraid of, flying is the safest part of the entire trip, driving to the airport is dangerous part.

I'm scared of it because I used to jump out of them 7,000 feet in the air. Trust me that's scary.

The odds of dying on an airplane flight are 1 in 29.4 million :)
You'll be fine.

I know where you're coming from. I won't even let other people drive me somewhere. I'm not putting my life into someone else's hands.
I've been told that there are drugs that can make you sleep through the flight.
Good luck!

Hello Emily,

A lot of people feel like you do. Many of our delegates are quite hard on themselves that they have this fear and expect themselves to love the whole experience. Not everyone does enjoy flying and the reasons are as many as you can think of. Generally speaking, the best way to beat a fear of flying is to do it gradually. As part of the process of beating a fear, some will attend courses; some will take 1-1 help; some will even learn to fly. It really is a matter of thinking about what will work for you. There is no 'one way' to beat the fear of flying. You have many options open to you and there is plenty of 'free' stuff out there to help you. Be very careful looking around the internet for help as anyone can just publish anything on there!

Take care
Paul
