When I was a kid my father bought a live turkey in September to raise for thanksgiving dinner. But he had become so attached to it by Thanksgiving he couldn't kill it.
So he just beat it up and let it go.

Lol... I just had to write a report on this at school... I wrote that the turkey should barely eat near Thanksgiving so it would not be big enough to be feasted on by a family, and should act very sick so nobody would want to eat it, by fears of getting sick because of the turkey.

Our family had a turkey that was going to be killed for dinner, so I gave it a hat and sunglasses and put it on a bus to Utah.
