Is America really sending jobs overseas if a union decides to stay on strike after the company threatens it will have to close and does?

Hostess closed its doors and went out of business. The Bimbo baking company in Mexico has said it wants to buy the brand. I'm not going to pretend I knew all the details about what the union workers were demanding. I'm just wondering if that counts as jobs "sent" overseas or was it just the workers not wanting to concede benefits. Seems to me a job that pays a little less is still better than no job.

Bimbo has wanted to buy the brands for a while . They do have some plants in the US though . So, it wouldn't completely be a lost company ! As my wife worked for Hostess for 20 years , I have some insider info . The company wanted to cut their pay 8% , pay 17% more for their medical and not pay retirement . While the CEO's gave themselves a 300% raise ! 95% of the people all went back to work anyway ! They need their jobs ! This would be the second bankruptcy and second cuts the employees would have to take . But now the Judge has ordered Hostess's crooks to negotiate with them and stop the loss of 18,500 jobs . My wife and most others continued to work anyway . Hostess used the strike to liquidate and line their pockets before someone found out about it ! Hostess isn't dead yet ! The Union was offered 25% of the company and two seats on the Board . So, they just didn't strike for no reason . The employee's were ready to take the cuts and continue working . The loss of a retirement fund is the big issue .

Hmmm. They reported the plants closed here in Chicago. Maybe they have different unions or maybe they just want this plant closed. Thanks for the info.

newbuddah13 : Bimbo is non Union . Hostess execs used the strike as an excuse to bail out of their debts and put more money in their pockets ! Believe me almost all the people were working because they needed their jobs . What would you think if you have paid into a retirement fund for 20 or 25 years and now Hostess says no retirement ! Because they have blown their share !

I get that it sucks. And I would probably walk also. I work a non union job with no benefits other than health care. If I was putting money into a retirement account that went bankrupt I would be upset also. (Cough cough.)Social security.

That's one of her alternatives . She'll get some from the Union , but it's less than half of what she was promised . Hostess execs got nailed yesterday by the bankruptcy judge about the raises and giving themselves bonuses for sale of the assets ! My wife needs her job as I'm disabled . So ,I'm keeping my fingers crossed ! There is a rumor that the Union may buy out the whole company !

I agree with you that less pay is better than no pay, but my understanding is the union has been making concessions for years and decided to draw a line in the sand.

IBC called them on it, and the union lost.

It remains to be seen how IBC fairs.

I could maybe agree is the benefits were new, they weren't. I could also maybe agree if the CEO and top a few executives hadn't taken 3 million in raises as the company was failing. You can't afford to pay the workers their contract guaranteed benefits, but you can give 8 people 3 extra million for having a sucky year?

And if the company does go under the CEO will get hired on at another place to get more raises and run that company out of business.

Finally someone who understands ! I applaude you ! These employees were working when Hostess made it's own decision to liquidate ! Then give themselves more bonuses on the sales of assets . How would you feel if you had paid into retirement for 20 or 25 years and have them tell you that there will be no retirement ?
