For me I will lay in bed about an hour -- then give up and go do something productive that I don't enjoy (read book been putting off, clean room, etc...) I don't want to watch TV or do something fun because then I might stay up another 2 or three hours. After my non-fun activity gets boring I feel like trying to sleep again.
However-- my not falling asleep does not involve thinking of a person-- so maybe a different solution would better suit you.
I also often face this problem. I tried to think of other problems that I am now currently facing. During the evening , I will go for a jog so that in the night I will be tired to fall into sleep easily.
I would get on Ask and start helping others with "their" problems. ;-) Well, actually that only works a very small part of the time - only if you do it until you're just about brain dead. This is because you still have to get up from the computer get back into the bed and lay there for, as Cj said, at least 7 minutes, to fall asleep. Well, if you've got somebody REALLY special on your mind (or if I do anyway), I don't fall asleep in 7 min., 17 min., or not even 27 min. usually. If you've got you a sweet warm-blooded "fur baby", cuddle up with it if he/she sleeps in the bed with you and, if it's good thoughts you're having, think of your dog or cat being that person your hugging up to. Sad thoughts, hold on for dead life, and let them be your lifesavers. I've done it most of my life and it works both ways. Now, if you don't have a warm-blooded fur baby, get a body pillow. Now, when it's time, you go try it, honey, and see if it works for you. It's all in your imagination. :-) God Bless.
Well I work night shift from 7pm to 7am. When I get off I go to the gym this usually makes me fall asleep when I get home. Now if I don't go to the gym I usually have a hard time sleeping. Sometimes I have a glass or two of Jack and Coke to put me to sleep. Or You could take some Tylonal Pm.
Start off by trying melatonin. It is not a sleeping pill. It is a natural supplement found in the vitamin aisle. A minimum dose of 3MG is recommended but up to 6MG is useful. More than 6MG is not harmful just not useful.
