Are you better off than you were four years ago?

this question should have been a more used phrase by the GOP. President Obama promised that it was entirely within his power to erase the deficit and cure the economy in merely one term. I didnt think he could, but we gave him a shot anyway. He has failed. So why was he reelected? What has changed? How have you benefitted? How has he earned the American people's vote?

Report as

Yes! My family is much better off. Saving the auto industry was a good thing. Not just for auto workers, but for all the auto supply companies. My husband's employer had record profits last year, resulting in employee raises. I also have more clients than I did a few years back because of the upturn of the economy. Obama's Making Home Affordable Act allowed us to refinance even though our mortgage is underwater. We're saving almost $200 per month now. I have a son with hydrocephalus. I always worried that he'd have a hard time getting insured once he is old enough to get his own insurance. Thanks to Obamacare's pre-existing condition clause, I no longer have to worry about that.

Tra, you're mentioning personal matters so I feel obligated to ask before debating: is it okay if I try to argue about what you say?
Report as
Tra I'm so happy for you! That was so inspiring for those in the same boat.
Things are slowly getting better and will continue....
Report as
I'm not really sure how you could argue what I said. It is what it is and it was good.
Report as
Tra - I'm meaning to be polite.
Report as
Ladywood - How nice!
Report as
Well, that was very nice of you. If you have an argument, bring it. But please be aware that I argue back :)
Report as
tra1215 - yeah - while the taxpayers swallow the price tag. Really glad that "you" are doing fine - while the rest of us are forced to carry the expense. You are on government "welfare" at the cost of your fellow Americans - period. Be proud!
Report as
Tra, is that what you're talking about? Welfare?
Report as
WOAH! NO, my family has NEVER taken ANY government aid! We both work! My kids don't even qualify for reduced lunch at school. How did you surmise from my original post that we're on welfare?! I'm incredibly offended! Jerk!
Report as
Campbell, could you be any more offensive?
Report as
Tra it was only a question. Some people need welfare, there's no problem with it as long as you're not abusing it.
Report as
So okay, you don't use welfare, and that's all you have to say.
Report as
No, that's far from all I have to say. You're the one who brought up debating, but so far all you've done is ask if I'm on welfare. And I answered you. If you have any other questions, feel free.
Report as
All I've done is ask questions because this isn't going right. You think I didn't intend to ask those questions? I expected to be at a point by now and if I go any further I'll just embarrass myself. Bye.
Report as
How can you expect to be at a point by now, if you haven't made a point? I don't understand which part of my post you wanted to debate. Is the problem that you can't find an argument with anything I said? It's fine if you want to take off, but to be clear, your questions didn't have a point.
Report as
I'm not a coward. I asked if I could debate you and you got defensive and lengthened things. I made myself clear and was about to argue until Jcampbell brought up welfare; I wanted to make my argument adequate so I asked if welfare was what you were talking about (i.e. examining the subject before arguing) and you got defensive again. Now it has us in this quibble. I'm barely in the mood to debate anymore but if you want me to start, I can (even though it will just seem ridiculous now).
Report as
You must be the most polite debater ever. You're gonna lose just because you're too nice to actually start. If ya got something to say, spit it out already!

Firstly the unemployment rate is only down probably because Obama created more government jobs that we pay for, and maybe some seasonal jobs that were created for the holidays that have nothing to do with Obama. Secondly I'm glad your son can get a doctor but it's illegal for a hospital to deny anyone unless they don't have an emergency; if they can't pay for the ER, it's paid through taxes.
Report as
You misunderstood my comment about my son. He has been on our private insurance (for which we pay premiums, deductibles and co-pays) since he was born. He's 7. My concern was that when he is an adult, he would be uninsurable because of his medical condition. Obama constructed a pre existing condition law that will prevent insurance companies from turning him down. But you hit on a very good point about how unpaid ER bills finally get paid. Obamacare makes sure that people who CAN afford insurance, but just don't want to pay for it won't be able to push ER bills on to taxpayers. Which is good.

I didn't really say anything about unemployment, so I'm not sure where you're going with that.
Report as
I don't quite understand. I'm sorry, this "debate" is such a mess.
Report as
If the government paid the debt of an entire idustry, in my opinion thats just as good as welfare. I use "good" ficticiously, I do not see the bailout as necessary. If we remove one part of the capitalist system the rest will cause undue stress and woe. Its a timebomb

Romney would have done worse. That is the reason Obama is back in office

He gave people free money! He's taking from the rich and giving to the poor! Once the rich go poor too (i.e. the only source of money goes broke), I wonder what we're going to do.

No marcus, he isn't.

How do you figure that?

How do you figure he is giving people free money?
Report as
Have you seen the "Obama money" videos?
Report as
Ah marcus, you know I pay no attention to biased videos. Show me actual news sources.
Report as
It interviews people who favor Obama.
Report as
I saw one on YouTube put out by glen beck. It never truly IDs the people in line, just shows a line and what he claims it is for. I heard 2 "interviews" funny, both black people. Beck wouldn't be playing on subconscious bigotry, would he? Also, nowhere is there any actual proof that these are real people, with real attitudes.
Sorry Marcus, I don't believe it.
Report as
There's a video in which it shows the entire crowd (and they are, in fact, all black) and some people are inquired loudly IN the crowd where everyone can hear.
Report as
I can put together just about any kind of video, ask the guy who put together the so-called movie about Mohammed. Since I know there is no such thing... Google it. The only places showing a video are right wing sites. If something like this was for real, you would find actual evidence of it on actual news sites.
Report as
I watch liberal news stations and I honestly believe they don't talk about anything that goes against their affiliation. That's why I like Fox.
.
I'll watch the video again.
Report as
Sorry Boo, I had the story wrong.
Report as
No problem marcus. Just remember question everything, cross check everything. Have a great thanksgiving.

You too, Boo!

I've seen the "Obama Money" videos. I couldn't help but notice that in the first one, from 2:37 to 4:00, is a clip taken from a documentary in which A. Pelosi ALSO interviews republicans from the south who gouge welfare when they really don't need it. Funny how the maker of the "Obama Money" video didn't put those clips in his vids.
Report as
Welfare? All of that. No job? well we'll just pay you for nothing! RIng a bell?

I'm in a lot better place than I was 4 years ago. By the time Bush was leaving office, I was literally on the verge of losing everything I owned, and having been fairly well off when he originally took office, this spoke volumes at how much of the economy failing was his fault. Since Obama's been in charge, things aren't back to where they were pre-Bush, but definitely much better than they were.

Yes, business is up. He accomplished quite a bit for someone the GOP tried to stymie at every turn. Now that we have CEOs of major companies and owners of small companies both calling for taxes to be raised and the fact that GOP got their butt spanked in the election, maybe they'll grow up and do their job.

Business is only up for the holidays and otherwise it's probably government jobs that we pay taxes for.
Report as
Yeah I think their butts are still a little Red from the spanking, but they are slowly realizing they have to pull up their big boy pants and get to work now. Lol
Report as
Marcus, my business is up and it depends neither on holidays nor government. What it depends in is people having money to spend.
Report as
The unemployment rate is still 7.9%. But congratulations on business.
Report as
Yes and until Europe gets its act together our employment rate is only going to improve slowly.

What is Europe doing?

They are sliding back into recession. Even chinas economy is slowing due to lack of customers.

Am I personally? Yes a little bit, but I give no credit to either party. The only reason that I have a stable home and able to pay my bills is b/c I've gone into work everyday like I'm supposed to for the last 7 years. Am I fortunate that I work for a company that the U.S. is dependant on every single day? Yes, but that was also my choice when searching for a job and I've been fortunate... but like I said, not from the aid of either party.

Yes, I own a house now. But the reason he was elected again was because we didn't want the policy makers who got us into this mess doing it again. They had 4 years to come up with new ideas. What did they do? They ran using the same failed policies that got us into this mess. How did they expect to win without coming up with new ideas?

an economic falter is part of the natural cycle. No one person's fault. No one president can screw an economy as badly as it has been. Just like Hoover didnt really cause the great depression, he was just president during it. I weep for the future of America
Report as
If no one president matters, why weep?
Report as
no one president matters when it comes to the economy faltering. Steps should be taken to further the strengthining and growth of it, but The current president an his administration are counter-progressive
