There are many ideas, theories and beliefs on this. What seems common is that dreams are where your mind processes information. Some people think of it as a communication between your subconscious and conscious self, others view it as a soul/mind connection, while others see it as a time for your mind to run permutations to train itself to do better in the wake phase. There are yet more ideas as well.
What we know, medically, is that dreams occur in what is called REM (rapid eye movement) of sleep while your EEG (Electroencephalography - measures neuronal firing in the brain) looks very similar to the wake phase. In most people the body/muscles are blocked from receiving this communication. Interestingly, people who sleep walk have a failing in this blockage. In sleep studies, they found that people who dream about a specific task or skill will see an otherwise unexplained increase in their performance. It was, in part, from these studies that the idea that dreams were a form of training tool came from.
In your case, you may be dreaming about what your subconscious or soul may either want (or fear) to come true, but your conscious mind does not see it as possible.
We dream things because some where in our heart those things have been for a long time and we actually could not delete it from there. Some times they are good and some times worst. Wish you happy dreams.

dreams is something natural , we can't change this fact and if we didn't dream this mean there's something wrong with us and all of us dream just the crazy people , dreams is a way to communicate with our brains and our hearts this is why sometimes we saw in our dreams nightmares and that mean our psychological ill we are sad about something or angry and when we saw a beautiful dreams ir mean we are happy .
I dreamed a dream in time gone by, When hope was high and life, worth living. I dreamed that love would never die, I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid, And dreams were made and used and wasted. There was no ransom to be paid, No song unsung, no wine, untasted.
But the tigers come at night, With their voices soft as thunder, As they tear your hope apart, And they turn your dream to shame.
The brain, like many other organs continue to work after were asleep. In our sleep your heart and blood and lungs still work because of your brain. So whatever you touched or smelled or thought during the day is still in your head throughout the night. If you saw someone you liked it might appear in your dream. So your stuck in a world while you sleep because your thoughts are still functioning.
Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. -Harriet Tubman <-- And that is why we dream...
A dream occurs randomly in the rem state of the sleep cycle. When in rem sleep your emg is relatively similar to when you are awake of in stage 1, you brain is producing alpha waves, at around 7 hz. Dream topics are comp, teeny random and will often make no sense if you can remember them the following day. They often are triggered by memories and are thought to be a way that your brain converts short term memories into long term memories. If you can remember one, you might notice you could have, for example been on a boat and walked around the bridge and your suddenly walking on the Tarmac at an airport. That is what I mean by random.
