Depends on your religion. Many "eastern" religions don't believe there is a God to forgive you ... but that you accrue "karma" or some other universal scorecard that is used by the "universal consciousness" (god by another name, IMO) to decide your fate.
Forgiveness of sins is what Jesus came here for. I was taught to pray as if talking to a friend. As you grow more used to it you can adjust your prayer to express your understanding of what it should be.

God sees a sincere heart and a repentant one. He sent His Son so we could be reunited with Himself. He is Faithful and yes, He forgives us. He loves us and the Bible tells us that if any come to Him, He will not cast them out. So, yes, He will hear our sincere prayer and is faithful to forgive. He is True to His Word. God Bless You. You asked how to pray. I'm assuming that you know that Jesus, the Son of God paid the price for our sins, that we would not have to and to know our Heavenly Father, if we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and we want to be forgiven our sins, we can ask God in the Name of Jesus to forgive us our sins and cleanse our heart and life. He will. Romans 6:23 tells us that the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus our Lord. God is merciful.
