For the ladies (or anybody that can help): How does a guy (like me) start a decent conversation with a women and keep it going?

I was wondering because when I start a conversation with a woman I tend to not come up with ideas on what topic to chat about. Then, the conversation just becomes silent after awhile.... -What I mean by decent is something that does not talk about sex, violence, past life, nerdy nor geeky, random crap, etc...

First things first: Don't call us females.

After that point, the best thing to do is say hello first. Don't mention anything about her being attractive in case she thinks you're just talking to her for sex. Maybe ask where she got an article of clothing or something, like you're inspired to get it as a gift for a sibling or family member. Observe little things about what she says, like if she has an interesting accent, ask where she's from.

Sometimes, making a joke about awkward silences helps as well. Having a sense of humour is huge in breaking the ice and getting a good conversation going.

Hi, Silverleopard. Why don't you like to be called female?

I find it rude, and it removes a suggestion of my humanity, which I find demeaning. I hold the same standard for women I know who say male instead of man. It's too clinical.
