There are things you can do to reduce or avoid acid reflux without using meds. Weight loss, avoiding fatty or acidic foods, avoiding caffeine and quitting smoking are some of things things you can do. Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta and Maalox all help reduce the acid that cause reflux. Beware that the overuse of antacids can cause diarrhea, consolation and sometimes even an electrolyte imbalance if the antacid contains calcium. Peptol Bismol and Carafate can be used. These help by coating the esophagus though they wear off fairly quickly. Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium work for many people.
