as a recent recruit of the SJFD this is how i went through it, get your EMT/PARAMEDIC cert, go through a fire academy, and try to network around the department you want to get hire at, they more the see your face the better chance you get to get in, at least thats what i did, it is not easy to get in most dept as some ppl may think it is, it all depends on how bad you want the job. The fire station I'm going for I no a lot of the guys some are my parents friends and when I was little I always went on ride a longs with them but some are looking to retire and being a firefighter is every boys and some girls dream mine included I just always had an act of helping people and I studied economics for a long time and I don't see our country having a bright future with money and firefighters have steady jobs seeing as everyone needs them and I love to get dirty there's no point in having a job you don't love

I was going to major in phycology but the state of Texas is holding me back by not allowing me to pass math even tho I have an a and I'm a history buff and I see are economy and think we're doomed and being a firefighter is very stable considering everyone needs them just like they need the police and my dads friend is one and it's just something that's fun interesting and gets much respect and I've never been one to quit when I was in highschool played baseball loved it but my senior year was hard and I didn't get to play in games but still went to every practice and left with blisters and dirt all over me

My dad is and has been one for over 24 years or so. Start out by asking your fire depo. if there is any paramedic classes you can take, college ( study stuff like it ). Just be very open to everything to it. (:

Depending on where you live you might be able to join a volunteer department get free training 36 hours (firefighter 1) (in Ohio). If you want to be citified as a career level 240 hours (Firefighter 2) like I am you'd have to go through either a vocational program that may be free like it was for me cause it's through the high school during Junior and Senior year or your state Fire Accademy
