Depending on your cat's metabolism, you can either free-feed or schedule-feed. If your cat is getting overweight, put the cat on a scheduled feeding. If your cat sheds weight easily or exersises plenty, free-feeding is OK. Just learn to recognize overweight cats because being overweight could be problematic and even deadly to your cat.
Schedule for sure cats are like horses they will eat and eat of course you should always have food available like dry food but feed it to much and it becomes fat and can develop lots of problems they will also eat things like grasshoppers and rodents anyway

We free feed our barn cats and they stay fit and keep doing their jobs with no problem. However we inherited a psychotic indoor cat and she has to stay on a diet 1/4 c am and pm. Otherwise she gets obese.
