Has anyone ever stopped to think about all the violence in nursery rhymes and lullabies?

Think about some of the nursery rhymes and lullabies you heard as a child. 1.) Jack and Jill. well Jack rolled down a hill and broke his head. 2.) Humpty Dumpty well he had a great fall 3.) Rock a bye baby. A baby falls from a tree top. And i don't even get ring around the rosie. but i'm sure if it has something to do with ashes and falling down it can't be good. Have any of you ever thought about this stuff?

Ring around the Rosie was about the Black Plague. A ring around a red rash was the first sign, pocket full of posies refers to the fact that ppl would put flowers in their shirt pockets thinking the scent would protect them ashes, ashes... Ashes were thrown over the tops of bodies in mass grave... we all fall down (die) Many old tales are quite gruesome, if you have ever read the ORIGINAL Grimm's Fairy Tales you would see..

Lilith, I am laughing CRAZY hard at your first comment here!! Deana speaks the truth as usual......violent nursery rhymes aren't too surprising considering the fact that the Bible is chock full of violent imagery......

If you want to see what some of the original tales had in them go here http://listverse.com/9-gruesome-fairy-tale-origins/

Deana, that link is sure to give my dreams some SERIOUS ammunition tonight......GEEEEZ!!! Who woulda thunk that the stories we all know and love have such evil and dark roots.......anything for a dollar huh? 8)

LOL sorry to give you nightmares NAFTA... I find it interesting really the differences between what was considered acceptable to children then and now, our kids now are *so* protected from the realities and nastiness of life... and yet are we really better off? Are they more responsible, more compassionate, more empathetic, more wise than kids back then? I wonder.

Agree Deanna, way over coddled and shielded from Realities yet allowed to play games that make FairyTales seem tame. Crazy no?

Wow, Deanna, this surprises me about our beloved fairy tales. Never thought about their hidden meaning! Thanks for the link, l'll be reading that this evening...

well NAFTA im ecstatic that you had your laugh your a** off moment there but my comment was not meant to be any more comical than someone dying, but i am a first time mother and my baby means the world to me and its until now that i stopped to think about what BUTTONZ asked about because for the fact that i never had children until now i had not paid any attention to those nursery rhymes that is why i said what i said

It's always better to stick with Aesop's Fables, and Fractured Fairy Tales. Found on "The Bullwinkle Show"

It's just like Disney Princesses-- Jasmine looks like she's wearing a bathing suit. Cinderella was at a party until midnight. Ariel disobeyed her father. Snow White lived in a house with 7 strange men, Etc. etc.
