How can I convince my mom to see a doctor/convince her that I'm addicted to nasal spray?

it is extremely frustrating: I tell my mom I'm addicted to nasal spray, and in extreme harshness and disgust, she says "no you're not" rolls her eyes, and insists it is my cold symptoms dragging on... I've used nasal spray for more than 11 days, and last time, over two months. the bottle ITSELF says rebound congestion can occur if used more than 3-5 days, and to see a doctor is symptoms worsen. I cannot sleep without the stuff, and frankly, I find myself sometimes using it twice a day. she gets very snarky and rude when I insist I'm addicted. my stuffy nose is not going away anytime soon-and if I can't breathe-I imagine I'll have to be awake during oral surgery, not to mention, I cannot sleep without it. talking to her about it and getting her to accept it is like trying to penetrate water though a wall. help? I'm concerned and I need to take something else, and I'd like to see a doctor for recommendations: but she acted VERY harsh and raised her voice at me for that "I will not take you to the doctor for something so stupid". ugh. this is a problem every time I get a cold now... this is the second time... I would drive myself, but that's a complicated matter, and I don't have time for a job with school, so, it's difficult to do this myself.

It is very addicting. This happened to me years ago. There are saline water products at the drug store that will help you and you nose problems until the addiction wears off which will take over a month. Would you mom mind if you put a pot of boiling water on the stove , then turned of the heat, and inhaled the steam while a towel is place over hour head to catch the steam? Breathing that in through your nose really helps. But what might help the most is to dilute the nose spray with a little water and each day dilute the nose spray a little more and keep doing that every couple of days until it's mostly water. Then you will have weaned yourself off of it. Having a humidifier in your room, hot showers to breathe in the steam, and breathing in the steams from the boiling water on the stove will help in between. I think tricking your nose is the best way by diluting it a little more each day. You can just put it into a bottle of drinking water and suck up some water into it. Don't use tap water. Also, keep putting very warm wet washcloths over your nose and breathing through them.

You put the nose spray bottle into the water and suck up a little water into it to dilute it. Still use it, but it will be less and less strong but you will be doing it slowly, so your nose has time to get used to it and doesn't shock itself closed because of the addiction.

Omg yes, thank you, finally, some validation. My mom INSISTED that it's not addictive "I've used it many times, and never had a problem."
.
The bottle says not to use for more than three days, and to contact a doctor if symptoms worsen. The problem is, I keep going after three days, and last time it got to the point I'd fight the urge, but end up using it twice a day. I did do a nasal rinse, but it stuffed back up in an hour or so. I try saline spray- I might as well be spraying water up my nose. I ended up using Afrin both times :/ I'm very concerned because I am having my wisdom teeth removed-I doubt I be sedated if I can't breath, and that would be horrifying to be awake while they cut my teeth and stitch my mouth. I just can't sleep without using it! (Sorry for the long paragraphs haha.)

Over a month? :( I am scheduled for this month. I have been using nasal spray over 11 days. It started in November, I believe.

Two good people in one spot. :) Hi, Shaylen. Hi, Sincerity.

Shaylen, I wish I had an answer to your question. I hope your nose clears up in time.

Hi Marcus :)

Thanks, me too!

You were just sick not long ago. How often do you get like this? :P

I know! Grrr... It says to stop after three days... But... I keep going... Oppsies!... I couldn't find anything else though. It's happened twice: last time it was about two months. My mom: "it's allergies" ok mom, Ok. It wouldn't be as big as a problem, if I wasn't getting my teeth removed. They've got to cut my bottom teeth and pull the roots out, because the roots are too close to the nerve endings in my jaw, if they hit it, I'd have numbness all in my face. Yea... Think I'll be asleep for that :P my brother is having his done tomorrow.

What's happened twice?

Oh- I stay on it a super long time (sorry that wasn't very clear- only got three hours of sleep-gotta do a few things then I'm probably going to catch some zzz's)

Stay on what? :P

Oh sorry-Afrin nasal spray- I get addicted every time now. (Aside from my usual drugs of course.... Jk lol.)
Report as
Literally addicted? Geez, sorry.

It's ok: it's not that bad. I just need to wean off, and next time use natural remedies. The chemical in it constricts your nasal passages or something.... I think it should be fine, I'm calling about it tomorrow.
.
Anyway how are you?
Report as
I'm okay. I hope you're well, but I can't ask because I'm off to bed. Nice talking to you!
Report as
Ok I was just about to say-I'm about to do a sinus rinse thingy and then I'm doing the same because I'm super tired! Night Marcus :)

You too.

Stop using it if you know it's bad. If your mother isn't worried, it's not a big deal.

My mom is very controlling-I never know what I'm talking about, even if it's mine own body and my own experience.
.
I can't SLEEP if I cannot breathe- it's not that simple-I try not to use it-and end up using it anyway-don't answer if you don't know/are going to get rude.
Report as
I'm worried-it is a big deal. Moms don't know everything... My mom isn't living within my mind or body-she doesn't experience it, therefore, is "all knowing" on the matter

Perhaps you should try talking to your school guidance counselor shaylen. Maybe she can help you, and even call your mother for you.

I'm in community college:only reason I'm still at home. I had to quit my job, otherwise I'd drive and pay myself.

If you're an adult, you don't need to convince your mother of anything. And whether you have a job or not, the hospital can not deny you care.
Report as
Well, I did talk to her just now, Idk if she was trying to silence me or what, but suddenly she believes me.
.
Idk what the doctors would do-but I feel it important to see one- just not sure how I'd get there if she won't take me... I'm so use to being dependent about doctors-not sure how to call or get care myself, I mean, she even possesses my kiaser card. (Sorry if I'm not making sense-kinda rushing) I appreciate your response, btw. I'm very concerned because last time, my stuffy nose lasted over two months and she didn't believe I had an addiction problem- I don't have two months, and need to have oral surgery... Not sure how that works if I cannot breath properly.
Report as
Sorry-I meant to say it's more a matter of calling and transportation.
Report as
Well good luck to you either way. If she won't take you, don't you have a friend or another family member you could call? You don't have to tell them why you are going to the doctor, just tell them you have a doctors appointment and would appreciate a ride.
Report as
My friend can't drive, and her she needs her mother to care for her (she's fatally sick.)
.
It's just that there are no available cars since my younger brother works, and I have never driven there before-it takes me a while to get to remember how to arrive and go home on my own.
Report as
I suppose I could just call :)

You don't need a doctor, just stop using it.

I want to know what I can have to wean off of it-just a recommendation-it's not easy to stop taking something your nose has become dependent on.
Report as
Trust me, just stop. Your nose will be uncomfortable for a little while but in no time at all, all will be well. I like to put a little vicks vapor rub on my nose holes and upper lip. The menthol is very soothing. Addicted is a big word, we don't need it here.

I will not be able to sleep-and I've got exams- I need something to clear my nose. I've tried saline spray, and nasal rinse. I end up using a few sprits of Afrin, because it doesn't work.
.
Afrin contains oxymetazoline hydrochloride- and that's an addictive chemical. Over a 11 days I've been using it. And it's worse. If that's not addiction, idk what you consider addiction, but that's addiction.
Report as
I'll never use it next time I get a cold-that's for sure.
Report as
Try something different, like 4 way nasal spray or something similar. Afrin is an upper, and even if your nose is clear it's like drinking coffee. Yeah, and try the vicks, I use it almost every night. I've had allergies all my life and I'm 63 now, so I know a thing or two about it..
Report as
I'll try the Vicks thanks.
.
I get intense about it sorry-because I'm having my wisdom teeth pulled soon-I do not want to be awake for that-I doubt I can be sedated if I can't breathe, and I'm concerned about that.
Report as
Plus, sleeping kinda sucks right now.

You are using it once a day, sometimes twice. What would weaning yourself off look like? Use it every other day, then every third day, then stop.

I will use it once-even though my nose is stuffy at three. (Accidentally used it to early) I tried a nasal rinse, and it came back. I try saline spray-it does zilch. My nasal passages ways are screwed up and need to heal now- but, because my pass ways are messed up, it's not easy to wean.
