The majority of people voted the House members in, to keep the President and Senate in check. That's how it's supposed to work in our Republic, by the constitution. When one or more branches goes to far one way, the people make a change to limit control. The House is doing what it was elected to do.
Neither side has a mandate. But Democrats want to break the back of Republican party by forcing them to raise taxes without spending concessions, a move that will irrevocably break the party into factions and harm the party. It might be good politics, but it is bad statesmanship. It is the goal of Obama not to fix the budget problem, but to ensure the Democrat party is the majority party for a generation. It's intensely about politics.
