Is it normal for people to read other people's emotions?

I know this is a weird question, but can you do this? Can you read people's emotions without them saying anything? Just bored right now :0

That special talent is called being human. It's a common human characteristic related to being empathetic. Everyone with a normally developed brain can read other peoples emotions through body language and facial expressions and subtle hints.

But who is the one that judges whose brain is "normal"?
Report as
What is in question concerning the development of the brain is not a subjective matter of opinion, it's an observable developmental handicap.
Report as
Maybe it is
And maybe it isn't.

LoL, okay ; /

Most often psychopaths are extremely skilled at reading body language, emotions and phycology.

Not sure about psychopaths, but psychotherapists.

It's a known fact haha
Report as
Just the skills you provided sounded more fitting to a psychotherapist than a psychopath.
Report as
I'm quite sure you're wrong about your characterization of psychopaths. psychopaths are less responsive to peoples emotions. Psychopaths are less empathetic.

psychopathic personality
~
a personality disorder characterized by amorality and lack of affect; capable of violent acts without guilt feelings (`psychopathic personality' was once widely used but was superseded by `sociopathic personality' to indicate the social aspects of the disorder, but now `antisocial personality disorder' is the preferred term)

Yes, but it's not always easy. Some people are really good at hiding emotions.

It depends how transparent the person is and how good you are at getting inside their heads I guess. I am a very transparent person. I can't help it. It's the way I was created.

Yep, most people can read them easily. That's why people can tell if you are nervous, happy, or having a bad day.

1.) I don't think so.
2.) Why would you think that?

Dang I thought I had it! Don't tell anyone, but I'm really h*gh on excellent we*d

Well, I will give you this much, my upbringing is kinda screwing with my mind, which is really f****** me over.
Report as
What meaneth you?
Report as
My upbringing. The crazy religion idea I was raised to think and believe in. Yeah, that's really screwing with my mind big time!
Report as
Aw I'm sorry. Whenever I start to think like that, I just watch Carl Sagan, or read some quotes by Stephen Hawking.
Report as
Oh. How often do you ever think like that?
Report as
I really have my doubts sometimes. And then I laugh at how ridiculous it is to believing in this imaginary being I have never seen, heard, or gotten any evidence from. Only from my parents!
Report as
Awww TheSilentNinja I'm sorry to hear that. Forgive me if I'm intruding but remember people have religion because, peoples highly evolved human empathy and ability to have a third person omniscient perspective on everything allows them to have that feeling that someone is out there and fall into delusional mythology called religion.

Coming from you, it made my day.

Oh no problem :D

@Rave: Oh yes! Coming from Jackie, it can make anyone's day! She's that awe- Never mind, it's bad enough she knows she's cute and she's one of my good friends. I don't need her getting a complex.
And, yeah, I know that's what religion is. I agree completely. Basically, the best way to explain religion and why it's around would be Blood Crazy by Simon Clark. If you read that entire book, you actually realize what religion was meant to be and why it's around. That was the reason I became an atheist and got interested in Psychology, despite its being a fictional book. It's really good, though. I need to read it again sometime; remind myself of the real TRUTH.

TheSilentNinja,
You're not alone in your struggle to feel relevant in the presence of greatness, we are all in awe of the wise intellectual giantess of Ninja_Jackie_san, and in such a beautiful package; just remember there is no need for envy, we all benefit from the good of her benefaction.
And thank you so much for the book recommendation; coming from you makes the book a must read.

Yes, it is completely normal. And when you're an open book like me, a person can't help themselves but read me.

Most people think they are 'super' at hiding their true feelings. They also think 'no one will know' the truth about what they think or feel. The truth is it takes an EXTREMELY accomplished liar to deceive others. Often we always give away our true feelings without even knowing it! When we observe a pack of animals it is obvious to see who the 'leader of the pack' is. We are all simply 'animals' of a different nature. Nothing more, nothing less. Just average.

I am skilled in the art of reading your emotions, and deceiving you of mine. I can read you like a book within the first 20 minutes of being around you. I can get you to trust in me and tell me whatever is on your mind easily. But I can make it so you can't figure out what is going on in my own head. But this is from extensive study of psychological books and my own deceptive lying.

Wow! I can read people's emotions very quickly, also. I can even guess what they are thinking by their facial expression :) It is a very tricky thing to do; I can deceive them of my emotions, also. Probably not as well as you, though!

Over a number of years, you learn to recognize the different signs of how a person's mind works. Some clues are easier to recognize than others.
Listen, and watch, and you too can develop these skills.
