We have done the same thing to our dining room table by setting something hot on it. We also got the white marks. We found this stuff called wood doctor made by Zep ( brand name). It works well. It comes in a spray can like pledge. It is kind of oily though, so I'm not sure you would want to use a lot of it on the floor, but it will do the trick if your just looking for a quick cover up. we found it at an antique store, but you may find it online somewhere. I haven't seen it in stores like Target or the grocery store though.
There is moisture trapped in the finish. Give it some time, it might go away on it's own. Or try a hairdryer to accelerate the evaporation. If the moisture has effected the hardwood already, you are out of luck. Then the only solution would be to refinish the flooring.
Orion pretty much has it summed up. Just had a thought...there is this stuff called Orange glow hardwood floor "something" (can't remember), but supposedly you squirt it on & rub it in to restore the floor. I heard about it, but have never used it...Good Luck with the spot & the selling of your house.
