What is the difference between a union of sets and an intersection of sets?

I saw it in my SAT diagnostics, and I wanted to know what was the difference.

Report as

Union of two sets A and B contain all elements that are in A or B or in both.
Intersection contains elements that are in both A and B.

We have sets
A = {1,2,3,4}, B = {3,4,5,6}
U means union, ^ means intersection
Then
A U B = {1,2,3,4,5,6}
A ^ B = {3,4}
(Thus is an illustration of chinta's definition.)
