Perhaps everything that has ever happened has already occurred in a single instant, but our brains are trying to make sense of things and have placed "events" in a certain order for purposes of scrutiny and understanding. Memories may simply be the things we've already given the once over, so to speak. (If these were the days of old, I'd probably be burned at the stake as a heretic for such a theory. Good thing those days are just a "memory"!) LATER: It has suddenly (ahem!) occurred to me that dreaming may be the method by which our brains discard ideas which have been, by the brain itself, proven false.
Your memory is defined as containing things you remember... whether or not they actually happened. "Implanted memory" is a term that has entered the public consciousness since the McMartin case when it was discovered that children had not actually been moIested, but had had false memories implanted by inept and overeager investigators.
