As long as you have a light on it, it will show the time.....the WRONG time but you never said it had to be correct.

I suppose if you have a light directly opposite of the suns position it might work.
yes, it takes the juice from the other side of the earth (China) and then makes an artificial sun just for where it is. If you can't see or read the sundial at night then you are not the chosen one, and must destroy your sun dial
