My son gets excited & bites on his hand when he gets excited & it is leaving a red mark on it & it is swelling. 11 months. Any advice?

People have said put hot sauce on his hand, but i cannot do that.

Observe him closely and when you see him going in to bite himself sit in front of him and grab his little hands, encourage him to squeeze your fingers, you can move his arms side to side so he doesn't bite. Identify his feeling for him, "you're so excited, mad, frustrated, etc" while trying to get some eye contact. Diversion in other words. Try the frozen wash cloths, teething toys and biscuits through out the day. He is probably getting some teeth. And discovering stronger feelings.

Try getting him a teething ring or something. Or use lemon juice, if the hot sauce-method refusal is a moral thing.

he has so many chewing toys. it's just been his habit for months, but now he has teeth so it's leaving marks on his hand...& he loves lemons sooo. i am not sure that'll work.

Oh. Why can't you use hot sauce? Is it a moral thing, or just that you don't want to?
Report as
my step mom is a nurse & says that it is not a good thing to do that. i would really prefer not to use hot sauce.
Report as
Hot sauce would burn his skin, lips, mouth...

And it'd also teach him not to put his hand in his mouth. It may not be all that good of a thing, but it's no less unhealthy than feeding him fast-food and Hostess goodies...(so glad Hostess is gone now)

Have you tried putting mittens or socks over his hands? Maybe when you see him do it give toy he can rattle.

That's adorable (to a certain degree) when I was a baby I would bite on my shirt. I don't know what my parents did but I eventually grew out of it.

Yeah I understand. Maybe try to get him to bite something else when he gets excited. Something he can always have with him
Report as
that's a good thought, i will try that.

Children with Autism do this. Maybe you should have him tested.

First, NO NO hot sauce. What does the pediatrician say? He needs an outlet and he's using his hand because he can't communicate. Try teething rings, frozen wash cloths.
The concern is why he continues the pattern if it's causing swelling and redness, it has to hurt unless he's not feeling it.

i wouldn't use hot sauce, i couldn't. & he has plenty of things to chew on. he just likes his hand. he sucks his thumb as well. but it's when he gets excited usually or really mad. & yeah it does have to hurt, he bites hard!

i couldn't use hot sauce. & he has plenty of things to chew on & stuff. he also sucks his thumb when he is tired. but he will bite down on the side of his hand whenever he is excited or getting mad. & i would think he would feel it because it does look like it would hurt.
Report as
Yeah, I know you wouldn't use it, it was for the people that suggested it to you. We have the same concern, why is he not feeling it. Some kids bang their heads against walls. What does Doc say ?

take him to be evaluated. My son has Aspbergers & has certain traits that seem unusual.

ur too young to have son, but biting ur hand when ur little is natural, and even if he bites it off, he is fine, no doctors needed or meds.

uhm, i'm 21 & i'm a damn good mother. who are you to tell me that i am too young? that isn't what i asked in this question so therefore i do not need your STUPID input about that. anyways even if he bites it off? are you just trying to act dumb because that is how it is sounding?

U look like ur 16

well i guess that'll be a compliment when i get older huh?
& honestly i do not give a damn how old i look what matters is how old i actually am, and i'm 21 so before you say "ur too young to have son"
