Look through the coupons, but resist clipping the ones for stuff you wouldn't ordinarily buy. If you have several stores close by, check their ads and go for the great buys at each. Stock up on things that will keep.

Go through your local ads. Circle the ones you will buy. Walmart has ad match so take all the ads there to do your shopping. Purpleplum.com, Shopathome.com/coupons Smartshopper.com and the krazy coupon ladys facebook page all have great coupons along with inserts in your local sunday paper and pennysaver. There are apps on your smart phone that you can download for when you are out shopping. See something you want? scan it using the app on your phone and it will tell you the cheapest place to get it, then show the cashier at wallmart to get a ad match on it. I do this all the time, I have lowered my grocery bill for a family of 5 from 1200 a month to 400 a month. That is a 800 dollar savings every month. Also the facebook page for krazy coupon lady often posts great coupon deals and where to get it the cheapest so its as close to free as you can get.

if you don't want to deal with the madness of cuponing, look for inexpensive items that go a long way. Like rice (the real kind not minute kind), noodles and potatoes. Do look for sales and stock up on these essential items when they go on sale. I also cut meat down a lot when I am looking to get out cheap. Use ground beef that can be "spread thin" in many different things. You can see on lables they will often tell you the price per ounce and you can compare that way to get the best deal. Also cut your own meat dont look for pre-cut or sliced it costs more. Look for short dates, which are items that expire soon and freeze them. They are usually reduced to at least half the cost. Look for discount bread stores too. The popular brand Aunt Millie's has discount stores. Whatever you want to buy think about whether you can find it in another form for cheaper. Such as frozen vs. canned, or regular vs. generic. Good Luck.
Buy less processed...and in bulk. I buy my ground beef 10-20 pounds at a time...then when I get home put it in individual pound(or 2 pound) packages. Of course sometimes I don't buy it ground...have a grinder for my kitchenaid mixer...will buy the cheapest cut of meat when it comes on sale and when I get home will grind it myself. Save 50 cents a pound usually. Same goes for Chicken and Turkey if I need ground. My Grocer also often sells whole ribeyes, and NY strip steaks for about $2 per pound cheaper than the pre-sliced versions...and they will slice it for me for free! Yes I spend $70 at a whop, but I get enough steaks for several meals...and I can eat steak!
Less Processed - Don't buy Hamburger Helper when all you need is boxed pasta and processed Cheese (velvetta) to make your own for fractions of the price. I think I calculated that the HH Cheeseburger macaroni my family loves comes on sale for $1.50 a box..can make it myself for about 50 cents.

#1 rule, Don't shop when you are hungry. #2 Shop the walls. Stay out of the middle isles as much as you can. Use a list and stick to it. Buy when stuff is on sale. Shop on days they are giving out food samples. (especially if you are hungry) Go to different stores if you can. Buy bulk if you have the room to store it. Divide the bulk items up with friends who will split costs. Read labels and check serving sizes when comparing prices.
