I'm 16 and I'm having brain surgery in February. I have to shave my WHOLE head for this surgery. What should I do with my hair post surgery?

how long will it take to grow to a length I can style it? My hair is like my security blanket, best way to cope? Are people going to be shallow about this at school?

You can donate your hair to locks of love, it'll probably take maybe 6 months to a year to grow back enough to wear you can style it, in the meantime, you could wear a wig-long or short-your preference. Many people who've had brain surgery or cancer do so till their hair grows back

I am going to donate it the day before the surgery. It's pretty long right now, about to the middle of my back and they are going to section it off and cut in layers to get the best use out of it. Do you know how long it normally takes incisions to heal so I can put a wig on?

No, but before you have the surgery you could ask your doctor-if I had to take a guess probably 2 months depending how the incisions are.

Go on youtube and look up talia.... Shes a beautiful 13 year old girl and she's bald, anyways she uses make up as her wig :) just watch how she does her make up... thats the greatest way to cope! She is just so happy and it will just make you smile watching videos of her (that sounds like what a creeper would say) but anywho....She is soooo good! If people Are acting retarded about the way YOU look thats their problem... You are getting that surgery to help you :) also, it depends on how fast you hair grows if it grows fast it will take about 6-9 months to get it like a pixie kinda style but you can always wear cute beanies too.

I know exactly who she is and she is beautiful. A lot of girls say that some girls can really look great with their hair shaved. I never really worry about other people's opinions but when I was in 6th grade I went through that very awkward stage (what 6th grader doesn't go through that) and I had my hair cut real short and those are the only pictures of my cut short that I have which is why I think it makes me nervous but I think some of my weird look then was also just the fact I was in 6th grade.

Wow .. A tough thing for someone so young. Just think .. Some little girl or young lady may get a beautiful hairpiece to get them through just
Such a trauma as you will get through.
You'll be a new person after the surgery & your hair will grow back even thicker & more beautiful.
I wish you the very best & a
Quick recovery.

I say 3-5 months
Although not sure if your into this but when your hairs really short you could do shaved designs on the side? There pretty cool in my opinion.
I used to have a undercut style and every time I would go to touch it up. It would grow faster n faster, Till my design was already fading in 2 weeks cause my hair was growing quickly...good luck with your surgery Hun. sending out lots of love.
there are so many ideas for you to come , stay positive ;)

Thank you very much. I have dystonia which is a rare neuromuscular disease. For the surgery they place leads in your brain and run wires down to battery packs in your chest to control your muscles through electric pulses.

I had to have my head shaved in the hospital when I was young. When I went back to school the kids started to tease me. I just said ya, its pretty funny looken' aint it. I was at a bowling alley last night and some nearsighted guy tried to pick me up by my nose and mouth. They laughed and the teasing stopped. When my hair finally grew back it came in curly and thick. It took several weeks, but it was worth the wait.

I know the surgery will be worth it. I went from a totally active lifestyle to now only have use of 6 fingers but not my hands and I definitely can't use my feet

The people who made fun of you are stupid! You are no different from them no matter what disease or condition you have. Every girl is beautiful it just takes the right people to see it. I hope this makes you feel even slightly better and I hope you will be alright and I wish the best of luck and I will defiantly keep praying for you to get better! Goodluck and Remember your beautiful inside and out and all those jerks don't matter :)

just wear a really cool covering. Most peers will understand & be sympathetic. Stand proud & loud with your new accessory.
