WARNING ! . . . One thing I learned that if you wear contact lenses , Take them out before welding because if you accidentally flash yourself , The radiation from the arc will instantly dry the fluid between the lens and the cornea , Should this happen NEVER attempt to remove the lenses yourself or you risk severe and permanent eye injury , The lenses have to be surgically removed , Also if you flash yourself , Get to the emergency room or your eye doctor immediately and get your eyes checked , The doctor will give you a special drops because without those drops , Your eyes will be in alot of pain hours after the flash

Two reasons: 1. Safety. Most people, and especially children and young people don't know that by looking directly at the welding arc that they can burn the retinas in their eyes causing irreprable damage or total blindness. Is similar to looking directly at the sun. 2. Quality control: Inert gas is used in wire feed welders to shield the area being welded from CO2 contamination in order to reduce porosity (minute holes that form in the weld when exposed to CO2). If the wind is up the shields are there to block the wind from blowing the inert gas away from the welding point regardless of whether someone without proper eye protection is observing or not, and rain can ruin a days work as well.
