How was the Dawes Severalty Act supposed to alter Native American cultures? Who benefited most from the act’s passage?

The Dawes Severalty Act played a major role in altering Native American cultures by assimilating them to the white culture. Communal lands were now converted to lands that were owned by individuals and nomadism was to be abandoned.
