This is typical because water evaporates , Periodically , You have to fill the toilet bowl because when the toilet is not used for a long time , The water evaporates and allows sewer gas to come in , So check the water in the bowl at least once a week and flush the toilet or add a bucket of water to the bowl

First you want to make sure that the water to the toilet is turned off. If it is turned off then turn it on. If it is on and water in the tank then flush the toilet and it should fill back up. If not then call a plumber.

Iron Marty is correct as usual, evaporation is the culprit and when the water is away the sewer gas will play...havoc on the nose, carpet, paint, and just about anything that will absorb and hold odor.
