It depends on what language. If it's English or Canadian French, the punctuation mark comes directly after the word. In European French, though, interrogation and exclamation marks are put after a space. I don't know about any of the other languages, but with the language you are reading right now, punctuation always comes directly after the word so that they connect. Ex. Canadian French: Comment ça va? English: How are you? European French: Comment ça va ?
