Just because you don't do good in school doesn't mean you will go no where in life. I know so many people that didn't go to school and now own their own business with lots of money. You can be smart without school and still be happy with a good life. I feel that school is another way for the government to scam your money, think about all the student loans you have to pay afterwards especially what you major in. Like going to school and doing good is very important if you want to have a easier job or career that pays more but we all have our opinions and thoughts about this. Nothing less you work hard for what you want to achieve and anything is possible.

Public school is free. School isn't about someone's innate intelligence, it's about them learning about stuff that they don't know but should, like how the world works. Or else they'll live their life dumb and confused.

Yes, agreed much. Many people today judge others by the level of education ones had based on school, college etc. People have many level of intelligence and it does not mean not doing good in school makes you a failure in life or society itself. Public school is free yes and is to embolden the mind. Again it does not necessarily mean you're stupid if you fail in school.
Report as
I know it does not always mean you're a failure at life, but it normally is a pretty good indication of it. Some people are like savants and have some specific skill that can't really be shown on standardized tests, but that's not typical.. Most kids who fail purposely are just too lazy to get their jobs done.

^I was referring to colleges and trade schools. Public school is not free btw. Our parents pay taxes which fund and keep the school operating such as staffs and everything else
Report as
Well yeah of course but it's very cheap in comparison to the prices of private school and colleges. And most people do not enter college just to fail- that wouldn't make any sense. This person was asking about high schoolers who are forced under the law to attend school.

I don't believe it's laziness. It more of like support. It can be anything from family problems that can interfere with school work. But yeah I guess it can be either or. Agreed!
Report as
True I didn't think of family problems, but I still think the most are like what the other answers say- to be cool. Okay cool, AGREED hah.

because it isnt challenging for them, to those kids, high school, or school in general, is a joke, because it presents no learning opportunity or challenge for them, so they do bad in order to try and show what is wrong with the system that is being used, i think they are right to do so, and they generally do make sure they do their best on things like the SAT and ACT which is what really counts when a college looks at you for entry

that's a nice way to look at it, but some really are just lazy.
Report as
some are, but i think most arent, because everyone who i've known that has done this, has gone on to have great success in life, my brother being one of them
Report as
wow that was fast lol well, yeah, like I said some are like that some are not. Typically, doing bad in school reflects one's work ethic, so people who are just too lazy cont. to be lazy. I think if you take the right classes (and avoid the ones that teach the bare minimum) it can be very challenging and fulfilling. Failing just to "make a statement" is a little pathetic in my opinion because although one might think they are making a statement, on paper all the school sees is a dumb kid. There are other ways to make statements.
Report as
true, but when a school is required to teach to the lowest common denominator, it causes problems for everyone who happens to be above that denominator, and since making a verbal statement is useless in that case, i think the kids try and maybe show the teachers via their work, because thats what the teachers see most from them.
Report as
Schools are required to teach the bare minimum to those who choose to take that path or are only capable of doing so. Most schools have classes available for people who want to challenge themselves, like how most schools have AP or honors, and my school doesn't offer honors but they do have a lot of AP's and they never focus on the bare minimum. They are fast paced and assume you know the minimum, so it's not like there aren't any options. If your school doesn't offer it, move on to a school that does (if you really care). I don't understand what you mean by them showing it via their work. How can you do that with math homework..?
Report as
well, if you have previously done very well on all your work, i'll put this in math terms since thats what you suggested. lets say you have grasped the concept of finding x perfectly, you have never messed up on it before, but you decide you arent being challenged by your work anymore, so some people, will deliberatly screw up something the teacher knows they are good at, to get the teachers attention, at least, thats the idea that they have, i agree with you that it doesnt really work that well, i merely explained why some people do it
Report as
Uh huh I guess that makes sense, but to me that just sounds like someone who needs attention, not someone who particularly cares about learning. Like I've said, I think the best way is to just take the hard classes and do the hard work- but I'm sure you agree.

because there bored. if you ask all those who left school and why most of them will tell you it was there teachers. you need great teachers to keep people in school and also the inviroment there living in plus friends. i think schooling needs alot more subjects for everybody too so everyone has something they enjoy

Some people simply just don't care. Or they think they look cool, which they don't.

In a way they do, but they want to get revenge on someone (maybe they don't really know who, just the world) and this is how they are doing it. Young people have trouble making the connection between what they do today and what happens to them in the future. Which is why parents keep telling their children what to do; the parents have been through all this and they know very well what can happen as a result to mistakes made now.

Your question indicates you actually realize A LOT more than the average teenager! Good for you. Whoever you are listening to, keep it up! These cool kids will be the next generation who will be sweeping the floors at Home depot, or Painting the lines on the road next summer. (or unemployed) And they will always wonder why they can't 'get' a good job with a GED (or NO diploma!)

Maybe it's not on purpose. Some people have crazy families with terrible values and some people have so much trouble with school. I had both those things growing up. It was all I could do to get through each day, much less do well in school. I went back to school now as an adult and I'm doing much better.

because they give up, because they have no chance of passing the class and it is too late to drop it, because they hate school, etc.

Because they think they look cool. It doesn't help that the part of the brain that calculates risk isn't fully developed until later in life (sometime in the 20-something years old range for guys). So there is a disconnect between not doing well in school and the consequences.

Probably because they are too lazy and think they are a bad @ss if they don't turn in their homework.

Because it's easier to do bad in school and some people can't afford to work and they just sit on their lazy @$$es all day and pretend to understand what the teacher says.
