Buddhism is not a religion. It is a philosophy. Buddha didn't claim to be a god, the son of a god, or a messenger of a god. He didn't even recommend a particular god or religion so far as I know. He became distressed at the suffering in the world and spent years searching for a way for people to deal with suffering and live a more contented life. He came up with a philosophy which basically dealt with a "middle way" in which one did not let one's desires become extreme so that wanting things was not the center of our life. There's much more to it, and I intend to read more about it. But it's not a religion.
