Do you think assault weapons should be banned because of Sandy Hook?

I think it is a stupid proposition. Think about it. This was a school occupied by defenceless women and children. A person with any firearm could have done the same amount of damage. It is my opinion that gun haters are just using this tragedy to advance their agenda.

I agree with you, however we need to have strict over-sight on who can own weapons. 100% background checks, shared legal and mental health records, etc.. and laws regarding private sales of weapons needs to change. I can sell a gun to my neighbor and it's his responsibility to have it registered, what if he doesn't? what if he's a nut-job and I don't know?

There is no gun regerstration laws in the US. With the exception of full automatic weapons that require a special license.

"registered firearm"??
Report as
My gun is registered with the state that I live in on my FOP ID. Now if I sold my gun, the state will have to be notified as to who, when and where it went to. And I will make sure all that paper work is taken care of.
Report as
Mauserman, are you positive? That doesn't sound right to me. Every gun has its own number on it. The state you live in doesn't know that you have a semi automatic, if you do have one? The shop that you bought it from has to notify your state has to who and where that weapon went to. If not, that's not right at all. That's some scary crap. That needs to be changed.

Excuse me, in the US. If the laws are like that, in which they are not, at least here in my state, how does anyone know that you are not a nut job? I dont know, do you think it's right that semi's or other non auto's don't need to be registered?

Excuse me again, it's a FOID CARD, firearm owner id.
Report as
@ Every, this is what I'm talking about, different states, different laws, poor/no record tracking nation wide. It needs to be federally standardized.
Report as
And the scary thing is, Mr. Maus., isin't fully informed about the laws and of course many out there are the same.

I am fully informed. All firearms can be traced by the serial number on that firearm. In most states if you sell a personal handgun you have to get a FFL dealer to do paperwork for transfer to the buyer that way the gun can be traced, however no paperwork has to be done on private transactions if you sell a long gun this includes semi auto long guns. Gun sales made by FFL dealers (gun stores) require paperwork to be filled out by the buyer. That paper work is kept on file by the FFL holder and not reported to any govt. agency. The distrubitor or manufacturer keeps records on what FFL holder they sell guns to and is filed with the BATF. Therefore if a gun is used in a crime the feds can trace that gun from the dist. or manuf. up the chain to the owner.

It's been proven that states with more lenient gun laws have lower crime rates.

the guns belonged to his mother she was s bonified collector .the law would not have applied to her as she was a reputable citizen licenced to have guns . and would under any of the changes proposed.

These aren't all or nothing ideas. Surely there is some middle ground that reasonable people can agree on. There isn't ever going to be a magic solution but we can do better than this.

You sound like the president and none of his ideas work

None? Half of this country does not agree with your viewpoint. Many people in this country also have serious concerns about the need for the average citizen to own assault weapons with clips that hold enough rounds to kill nearly 100 people in 60 seconds. People don't take those weapons duck hunting. As a country we can discuss these issues rationally.

Wowww! Some out there are not mentally/psychologically stable to carry/own a firearm. You know, like the sandy brook boy and the parents. "We" don't know of the other ones out there, and be sure that there are other ones. I own a firearm myself, a SW .9ml. and I look at both sides. More stricted gun laws, nothing wrong with that.

Oh my Lord in Heaven Maus., you say that the only guns that need to be registered here in the US are automatics? Sir, you are not informed, at all. After that kid murdered those people, how do you think the authorities found out who the gun belonged to? You don't know the law sir. It makes me wonder how many guns you gave away and to who? I don't believe then that you have ever had a background check done. Scary, very scary

To everyone. I am totally informed (see other post) I used to be a FFL holder and had to know the rules. For a dealer to sell a hand gun they are required to use the NICS (The National Instant Criminal Background Check System). There is no backround check required for the sale of long guns. You only have to complete the paperwork. And as far as me never having a backround check, the BATF just doesn't issue FFL's without doing a total backround check, they know if you got a jaywalking ticket.

I know Mauserman, I apologize for the heartache. I'm a woman, so I guess I'm good at it. I can just hear your voice, "TO EVERYONE!" I'm sorry. Merry Christmas to you.

I am 100000000000% agree with you. Gun shows are also a big part of my life. I'm only 13 but my dad tells me about this stuff and it seems so stupid when democrats think about things. Some of there ideas about congress seem right but others are crazy! You can not keep a gun out of the criminals hands so your just unarming your citizens which makes your country more prone to attacks! Also people just freak out after something horrible happens and give away their rights!
