When it comes to Christmas trees which is better, spruce or fir?

My neighbor can't decide and she thinks that I know all about trees(I don't know why she thinks that). I know absolutely nothing. Tree lovers help!

Firs are more symmetrical. Get a fir.

I would say fir because I have gotten fir for a long time. It always seems to be the best choice i could make when finding my own tree.

It comes down to personal opinion. And it also depends what you would be decorating the tree with. I usually go with fir. They are typically more symmetrical, as mentioned above, and also are USUALLY stronger than a spruce, as far as branch strength..

I'm not really sure if she prefers a strong tree or not. I mean, she told me she decorates the tree with really light stuff so you would assume that it being strong wouldn't be required. Thanks for the help, though!

A douglas fir has long needles and tends to dry a lot quicker, I have always like the Noble fir, it is shaped like a douglas fir, but the needles are shorter and they don't tend to shed as quickly as a douglas fir. Douglas fir trees are about the cheapest trees that you can buy, most supermarkets will sell them at any size for about $20. A Noble fir is more costly, but depending on how long you like to leave a tree up has a lot to do with choice, and as someone said above what you like to decorate with, my mother liked the trees that were tall skinny, with the branches very wide apart ( I refer these trees as Charlie Brown trees) I like a full tree like a douglas fir, but I do not like cleaning up needles and unclogging vaccums forty times a day while trying to take it down. If your neighbor likes to buy a tree mid month and leave up until after the 1st of the year she might be able to get by with a douglas fir, if she likes to get a tree early in the month and leave it up until after the 1st I would go with a short needled tree, regardless of what type it is. Shorter needles do not shed as quickly or dry out as quickly as long needled trees.

Fir has soft flexible needles the branches have better spacing for hanging your ornaments and the smell is awesome classic Christmas tree! Spruce has hard sharp needles. Thicker so ornaments don't always hang where you want. As for the smell? Don't get (what Mainers nicknamed) a "cat spruce"!!!!! It smells just like a houseful of tom cats making their territory!!!!! Trust me, I made that mistake and blamed my cat for a week before finding out. Fir trees are usually less expensive also.

spruce!choose spruce because i got a spruce its safe its needles are like round and their needles don't fall off as easy.i don't know much about fir we were gonna get fir but the needles fall off easier.but first you want to make sure the tree is healthy by the smell and always try to pull off A needle if it falls off easily and it does not smell like sap like you know what i'm talking about if it has that DO NOT pick that tree it means it will not last long.but... if the trees needle when you pull on them and they don't fall off as easy but they do fall off its fine.as long as they are hard to fall off its fine.also if the tree smells like sap its your perfect tree!good luck i hope your neighbor finds a good tree!

sincerely
Courtney

There are several types of fir trees, your neighbors best bet is to try to look in your local area (or out of area a little bit depending where you live) for what is called a Tree Farm. They may have a bit of a drive into a forest and it would be best to use a GPS to find the address, and it does take some work, but you are guarenteed a fresh new tree. A tree farm is a place usually towards outter lying of towns, and they do exactly that , they grow Christmas trees. They usually open the day after thanksgiving and stay open until Christmas eve. The people that run the farms normally have the types of trees sectioned off as to what is grown where and they usually will have already have them trimmed into the shape of a nice looking Christmas tree. But the catch is you have to cut the tree, and they will usually provide the saw and twine to tie the tree down with. The last time I was able to find a tree farm we paid something like $25 for an 8 ft but that has been years ago. Usually if you can find a Tree Farm the trees are not as expensive (mainly because you do most of the work) but you are guarenteed a new fresh tree that will last a long time as long as you keep it well watered.

My favorite is a Noble Fir, the needles are short, and they don't fall as easily, and they seem to last longer. They are a little bit pricier, but they are well worth it. Lately here in central Ca. the prices have been coming down a lot in the past 4 years. 4 years ago we paid over $100 for an 8-10 noble fir, 3 years ago it was $78, 2 years ago it was $68, and this year it was $58 for a 10 ft tree.
