Why do my ps3 controllers wont connect to the ps3?

i can play with USB cable in the controller, but the controller doesnt charge

Ya, i can play but i must connect the charger

your controller must not hve a built in battery, ooor, there is a place for the battery but you dont have a battery in there

did you plug it in to charge then push the ps button
