You did not mention your age, but if you are fairly young, or new to having your period, I would agree with those above in saying that pads would be the way to go. Toxic Shock Syndrome is a very real issue as gellomoon mentioned.....so if you are new to this, pads would be the way to go. Not all tampons are uncomfortable now like they used to be. I would not ever recommend using a tampon with a cardboard applicator. Instead, playtex makes a very comfortable one. And, yes, have your Mother, or somebody you feel comfortable with help instruct you to use it properly or it WILL be VERY uncomfortable.
