I start spider plants from the "babies' all the time. Put them in a glass of water for a week or two, untill you see some root formation, then plant them. I water thoroughly (over and over until saturated and then drained) once every week or two.
Spider Plants require less water and you should let them dry out before watering. Avoid overwatering because you will induce rotting. They have fleshy storage roots and that is why they need to dry out first.
