If you are talking locally in your immediate area, I have one idea. I look for fundraisers and donate 3 or 4 signed prints of my work (not the originals . . . I have digitalized all of my works and have a large format printer). I have donated to the local symphony, school booster clubs, church fund raisers, etc. I think I have gained a reputation even though many would not know me if they saw me.
The only problem with this technique is that, with recognition, you get your name on everyone's donor list for future events ;-) Never-the-less, I have had sales based upon the exposure my work received from these donations. (BTW, my owl avatar is one of my ink paintings)

Wow cutie, not so cute haha. Anyway a form of playing the anonomys artist is through graffiti, being a street artist. Of course it has its risks, fun, games but if you're great, commited, invisible and everywhere you can achieve great fame, well first would come infamy. Look up street artists like banksy, shepherd ferry, revok, saber and david choe (just some examples) to see what I mean. An easier way would be over the internet like you tube. Everyone uses it world wide.
Local art festivals , street fairs showcase artists work, and You don't have to be there . Maybe get a good friend to represent , like a sales person : ). Donate to local hospital wing. Maybe see if You can get a break designing a cover to a local event , or menu in a restaurant .You really don't have to be in the forefront ( although it wouldn't hurt) but you really need to be relentless in getting the work out there . One or two projects, word gets out. Good luck!! Bust your butt!
NeverMind, This isn't an answer to your question but I flagged your neighbour's unpleasant answer, which ha snow been removed. Given the things she said about you and the hatred she has shown toward you in her profile page, I think you should draw the Mods' attention to it if she continues to harass you in that way.
This is a friendly site and the kind of childish, destructive comments she writes are not welcome here. I don't envy you having to live next door to her but there's no excuse for her stalking you on line.
It wouldn't hurt to download a copy of her profile page so that you'll have evidence of her intentions, in case she changes it.
Good luck -- and I hope you make a success of your art.
I post all my art on Facebook and DeviantArt. I'm also going to set up a different FB page just for my art instead of having it on my personal site (cause I am picky about the friend list thing, lol) And I have actually sold quite a few pieces from having my art on my personal account on Facebook. Good Luck!
