While in their rooms at 221 B Baker street, Watson is examining a cane left by a mysterious stranger as Holmes sits staring out of the window. Holmes asks Watson what his theory is about what kind of person left the cane, Watson replies: "There is an inscription, To James Mortimer M.R.C.S. From his friends at C.C.H."

Watson concludes that it was a gift for years of faithful service; he also notices that the cane is well worn indicating the doctor does a lot of walking.
