What happened to critical thinking skills?

I'm not sure when all this happened but critical thinking skills seem to be in short supply now. people believe just about anything/ everything. the end of the world, the UN wants to take over the world, FEMA will place us all in concentration camps, etc. is it 24 hour "news"? blogs masquerading as facts? it kind of scares me.

This question is a direct result of the question I asked yesterday about parents lying to their kids about Santa and the Easter Bunny and stuff.....people get lied to from such a young age but are TOLD that it's the truth....then they find out that they were being lied to for so long by people they were supposed to be able to fully trust with their lives, so then they become confused as to who or what to believe...but everyone really wants to believe that no one would ever lie to them, so they follow blindly to anything they hear until further proof pops up.....but yeah, I question almost everything, because when you stop asking questions....you stop learning.....8)

Hey nafta, I never saw your question, this is more the result if some of the very strange "facts" I run across here. As for Santa and such, we have always believed in Santa and what he stands for. But thanks for your thoughts on this.

And FEMA could actually place us in concentration camps, it is a possibility and I will not go silently if it happens. And the UN wants to unite the world, Hence, UNITED Nations.

And no, I did not prove your point. I have extremely critical thinking skills. All corporations have a secret behind them, and everybody lies, I learned it the hard way.

"Strock and halo... You both kind of define what I'm saying." All of this religious stuff defines it, but think of this. During Hurricane Sandy, no reporters were let inside the FEMA camp that held survivors of the storm. You had to show ID before taking a shower. They described that it was almost like being in a concentration camp, military moved stuff around at night and people were outside during the day.

Ask the people who voted for the guys that said raped woman can't get pregnant because their body shuts down. Ask the people who believed or still believes Obama was born in Kenya. Ask the people who think climate change is a lie. They usually fall under a certain group of people. It's even worse when these people become parents. I have a few retired friends that teaches at public schools in middle America. Based off the students, you have to wonder about the parents. Geology class. Children wrote letters to him like, "My daddy says you are wrong. God made it that way and causes earthquakes to punish the gays". Plate tectonics for god sakes!

Critical thinking skills are certainly lacking. Half a country full of these people just elected a president under-qualified for the post and also himself lacking critical thinking skills.
I know these people will understandably disagree with me.

It's not a hypothesis . This is a supposition on my part based on observations first hand and on commentaries of various people in positions advantageous to make informed judgements.
Report as
Your supposition should have some basis in fact besides you not agreeing.
Do most of his supporters believe in the zombie apocalypse? Did they believe the world was. Coming to an end? Do they believe that the UN wants to conquer the world?
Facts to support you please
Report as
People seem to be gullible. I won't judge that from web sites like this because there are mostly youth here who are just amused by various subjects and haven't reached the level of maturity that is discerning to a high level. I'm afraid the level of discernment didn't seem to rise that high during the last election even in otherwise mature adults. I'm not talking about honest political viewpoints that differ. Things like dogs on the car roof, Republicans hate the poor, people not paying their fair share, if you are against same sex marriage you are a homophobe, people voting for a candidate because of his skin color ( any shade or lack of) --- all of these and more were seen during the election . I think people actually believed these were true or significantly true. Critical thinking I didn't see in these examples.
Report as
THAT I can agree with. There was a lack on both sides. Do you think it's the whole 24 hour "news" looking for something/anything to fire people up and get ratings? Are people getting lazier, thinking if its on the Internet it must be true?
Report as
Boo I think you think a zombie apocalypse is something out of Hollywood. But actually there is a very real possibility that a contagious disease epidemic could kill millions. That my dear is what is referred to as an zombie apocalypse. As far as Obamas skill set I see nothing in his past or present history that shows any experience in anything but spending. With this nation in this much debt there is no way I would be on vacation or any way the senate or congress would go home for Christmas ,Till this gets fixed.
Report as
Please notice I didn't mention Obama, as for zombie apocalypse, I'm pretty sure CDC does not refer to it that way but let me give you those two (just cause its Christmas) please address the rest of what I mentioned and even go beyond it. I see a tremendous number of people that seem to believe the oddest things and people who seem to take pride in a lack of education. I do not mean formal education either, anybody can continue to educate themselves without formal schooling.
Even address the simplistic mindset that says all GOP is good, all dems are bad and viva versa.
Report as
Celeb you forgot,we tried to kill Big Bird. I fear the people that voted for O more than I fear O
Report as
Boo, I'm sorry, the more I see your comments, the more I see its your "critical thinking" that lacks reality. That world you wish we had doesn't exist any more.
Report as
The world I wish we had? The one where people think instead of posting "facts" from blogs, etc?
Maybe you need to look up the definition of critical thinking.
Report as
Aikenback, Big Bird was a big thing that I forgot. Same idea there. I am sorry I even got into the old election junk and I don't think Boo was even thinking about it with his question. At this time critical thinking and the recent election just seemed to make me think of it's lacking presence.
I overheard a fellow the other day expressing his worry over his upcoming tuition bill, but that he was glad Obama was still in office to make that easier for him to handle than it would otherwise be. That kind of critical thinking is what worries me and probably tipped the election more than anything else.
Report as
Celeb, you got what I was saying unlike others but the fellow liking Obama in office is expressing an opinion.
What I'm talking about is people believing outlandish things that can be consistently disproven but they "saw it on the Internet" or "heard from someone" so it must be true.
In poetics liking or divining a candidate isn't a big deal. Believing someone belongs to a secret society (Harvard) or believing someone is Kenyan or believing the UN wants to take over the world. Those are what I'm talking about.
Report as
Ok Boo, like there is a Russian base on the far side of the Moon or almost every conspiracy theory we've heard of is true--- this is is basically what concerns you or at least seems to be running rampant. I've noticed it but being a skeptic myself I pretty much require critical thinking on any subject to believe in it.
Maybe too few people have heard of or cultivated the scientific method into their thought processes. The result of not doing so can be gullibility all over the place.
Report as
Yes! There is so much junk out there that people don't have the discernment to see. It infiltrates everything, politics, day to day living. I get it from kids, I don't understand it coming from adults
Report as
Celebrity is my hero
Report as
I wonder boo when you hear that the UN wants to take over the world do you look up the facts from many different sources. Or do you say that's crazy and go on your way. I know when the Embassy was attracted in Libya I told you there was something up. But you didn't want to believe it. Do you still feel that way after 3 months and the ring leaders have still failed to give their testimony.
Report as
Thanks for demonstrating my point bigguy. My sources are, as I've stated before, ap, bbc and Reuters for the most part so yes, I discount the nonsense. Ax for Libya, I do recall you saying Hilary was retiring so as to not testify, huh, looks like she will be or is Christmas a liberal plot to keep her from testifying? There is nothing "up" with Libya. There were state dry failures. Has happened before, will happen again.
